There were three distinct familes of Paynes in the mid Sussex area. "Paynes of Plawhatch" occupied small farms on the extreme south border such as Plawhatch, Legsheath, Monks-hill, Mawles, Walesbeech. "Paynes of Stonelands" were from Ardingly & West Hoathly. The third group were called the "Paynes of the towne" but have not been linked to as my direct ancestors.

Names in Italics are not direct ancestors and are usually later indirect generations of the main ancestor.
