Parish Records Summary

To quote from John Richardson's Local Historian's Encyclopedia:
"A Mandate, formulated by Thomas Cromwell in 1538, instructed each parish in England and Wales to purchase a 'sure coffer' (the parish chest), the parson to have one key and a churchwarden another. Each marriage, christening and burial was to be registered weekly by the minister with the churchwarden acting as witness; these records were then to be deposited in the chest. Quite often these early registers were simply loose sheets and the survival rate is not high.
"Order 1598. An Order signed by Elizabeth I this year required that all the loose leaf registers be transcribed into parchment books, especially those records since her accession - a qualification which has led to the fact that the extant records of many parishes date from 1558...".
Also in 1598 it was required that once a year the priest sent a copy of all the BMDs to his diocesan Bishop (or in some cases, his Archdeacon) - BTs.

The following table shows the Parish Record Transcripts that have been seen. If only the Sussex family history site has been seen (and not a transcript) then this is shown with SxF. Most Parish Transcripts have extensive gaps around the civil war period (c1640-c1660). Others do have short gaps at other times. The marriage dates are based on transcripts seen and the Surrey/Sussex marriage Index CD's. If only the CD has been used this is shown.

In the Family Group Information, the place of birth, death or marriage is just shown using the parish name. This should be read as the appropriate church name (shown below) within that parish. The person could live anywhere in that parish and the location stated should not be taken as the actual village/town as some parishes were quite large. (see parish map) eg Tandridge parish stretches from Sussex border to north of Oxted and Tandridge (the actual town/village) itself was in the very north of the parish.
