William Mills & Frances Martin were one of my 7th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

William Mills was probably baptised on 16th July 1738 in Worth, Sussex, the son of John Mills & Judith Blundell. He married Frances Martin on 5th November 1760 in Horne, Surrey. William possibly married secondly Mary Phineas on 2ndAugust 1778 in Worth Sussex.(both were widowers). William was probably buried on 8th January 1818 in Horne, Surrey (aged 79).

Frances Martin was maybe posibly baptised on 1st January 1742 in Uckfield, Sussex the daughter of William & Sarah Martin. She was buried on 19th August 1771 in Horne, Surrey

William & Frances had four known children (1-4) and William & Mary had one child (5).

  1. Jesse Mills was baptised on 12th April 1761 in Worth, Susex. He married Mary Maynard Everest on 8th April 1782 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
  2. Anne Mills was baptised on 15th May 1763 in Worth, Sussex.
  3. Elizabeth Mills was baptised on 9th June 1765 in Worth, Sussex.
  4. Mary Mills was baptised on 18th October 1767 in Horne, Surrey. She married Thomas Daniels. Details of Thomas Daniels & Mary Mills are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  5. Martha Mills was baptised on 15th August 1779 in Burstow, Surrey (shown as Miles). She married James Jenner on 22nd August 1799 in Horne, Surrey and was buried on 7th January 1837 in Burstow, Surrey.

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. Other names shown in the register are Mills, Mylls, Myles, Mill There is also Miles & Milles but these may be a completely differant name.
  2. There are a number of William Mills born in this period.
    1. 16/07/1738 in Worth, son of John Mills & Judith Blundell.
    2. 13/06/1736 in Horley, son of Richard Mills & Elizabeth Cudmore
    3. 11/02/1741 in East Grinstead, son of Thomas & Mary Miles
    4. 09/04/1735 in East Grinstead, son of William & Anne Miles, but possibly married Jane Henty on 7/12/1758 in East Grinstead
    5. 16/01/1726 in Worth, son of William & Mary, unlikely as birth date inconsistent with age at death (13 years)
  3. The firstt William is the most likely as the birth date matches age at death and the first three children were all born in Worth. In addition William's parents were married in Horne, confirming strong links with that area, (and where William was buried). The parishes of Worth, Horne and Burstow all meet and therefore movement from one parish to another would be easy.
  4. No 'Frances Martin' found in Charlwood, Crowhurst, East Grinstead, Horley or Worth parish records, but a number of other 'Martin's exist.
  5. The only 'Frances Martin' found so far is the one in Uckfield. However this is some distance from Worth so may be eroneous. William & Sarah Martin had three children in Uckfield. Mary bap 05/02/1740. Frances bap 01/01/1742 and John bap 24/02/1743. There was no marriage of William & Sarah in Uckfield and no ealier birth of William Martin.
  6. No 'William Mills' in Crowhurst but other 'Mills' exist.
