John Colegate & Elizabeth Sale were not one of my direct ancestors but they are probably related to me as later generations of a direct ancestor.

John Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1725 in maybe possibly Chevening, Kent (derived as no birth records found). He married firstly Elizabeth Sale on 28^th October 1756 in Chevening, Kent (Elizabeth from Sundridge). He probably married secondly Elizabeth who was buried on 26^th October 1777 in Chevening, Kent (Inscription-second wife of John Colegate). He probably married thirdly Esther Collins on 5^th March 1779 in Chevening, Kent (source is IGI & unconfirmed). Esther died on 19^th January and was buried on 22^nd January 1797 in Chevening, Kent (shown as wife of John of Turvis Farm, Chevening, aged 62 - inscription third wife of John Colegate). John was buried on 13^th January 1801 in Chevening, Kent (Inscrition shows- 'aged 74 , late of Turbins')

Elizabeth Sale was baptised on 21^st March 1732 in Bessells Green, Sevenoaks, Kent, the daughter of David Sale & Martha. She was buried on 26^th January 1771 in Bessells Green, Sevenoaks (Inscription-First wife of John Colegate, aged 38).

Elizabeth Colegate was baptised 3^rd August 1757 in Chevening, near Sevenoaks, Kent. She was buried there on 17^th June 1761.
Robert Colegate was baptised 16^th September 1758 in Chevening, near Sevenoaks, Kent. He maybe possibly married Sarah. Robert & Sarah had eight known children.
1. Sarah Colegate was baptised on 16^th January 1791 in Bromley, Kent..
2. Ann Colegate was baptised on 11^th November 1792 in Bromley, Kent.
3. Robert Colegate was baptised on 15^th February 1795 in Bromley, Kent.
4. Mary Colegate was baptised on 12^th March 1797 in Bromley, Kent.
5. Thomas Colegate was baptised on 17^th November 1799 in Bromley, Kent.
6. Frances Colegate was baptised on 26^th September 1802 in Bromley, Kent.
7. Jane Colegate was baptised on 24^th March 1805 in Bromley, Kent.
8. Maria Colegate was baptised on 12^th July 1807 in Bromley, Kent.(Source is IGI & unconfirmed).
Mary Colegate was baptised 3^rd September 1760 in Chevening, near Sevenoaks, Kent. She possibly married John Boorman on 5^th March 1779 in Chevening, Kent
Elizabeth Colegate was baptised 20^th May 1762 in Chevening, near Sevenoaks, Kent.
Charlotte Colegate was baptised 3^rd April 1764 in Chevening, near Sevenoaks, Kent.
Martha Colegate was baptised 23^rd March 1766 in Chevening, near Sevenoaks, Kent.
David Colegate was baptised 3^rd April 1768 in Chevening, near Sevenoaks, Kent. He married Mary and they had four known children. He was buried on 6^th February 1837 in Bessells Green, Sevenoaks, Kent (shown as of Turvis Farm, Chevening, aged 68).
1. Harriet Colegate (Harriott)was baptised 23^rd September 1792 in Shoreham Mill, Sevenoaks, Kent.
2. George Colegate was baptised 8^th May 1794 in Shoreham Mill, Sevenoaks, Kent.
3. William Colegate was baptised 15^th June 1796 in Chevening, near Sevenoaks, Kent. He died 19^th January 1828 and was buried on 29^th January in Chevening, near Sevenoaks, Kent ('aged 31').
4. Henry Colegate was baptised 1^st July 1799 in Chevening, near Sevenoaks, Kent.
John Colegate was baptised on 30^th June 1770 in Chevening, near Sevenoaks, Kent. He was buried at Bessells Green on 12^th June 1771 (' son of John & Elizabeth').

A number of other Colegate's are referred to in the church records; JohnColegate died 9/12/1741 and his wife died 12/1738
It is confusing where people are actually buried .Is the service at Bessels Green and actual burial elsewhere. Similarly baptisms need clarification
Major dispute area. According to a number of web sites this Robert Colegate (of Sevenoaks) married Sarah Bowles and emigrated to America where his son William founded the Colgate company. A Robert Colegate did marry a Sarah Bowles on 28/03/1780 in Staplehurst, Kent. She was baptised on 11/12/1759 in Maidstone, daughter of John Bowles & Ann Bagnall. The Robert lived in Hollingbourn, Kent when he married (shown in Staplehust parish register) and lived there subsequently as his children were born there (Charlotte 1781, William 1783).
Robert (from Sevenoaks) brother David had children in Chevening, Sevenoaks, sister Charlotte married in Chevening, sister Mary married in Chevening in 1779 and father John was buried in Chevening so one can safely assume that the family did not move to Hollingbourn (5 miles east of Maidstone and over 21 miles from where the family lived in Chevening). If Robert moved on his own he was quite young to do so (under 20 probably as he would have then married at age 21) and this would be very unusual.
One can therefore conclude that this Robert in Hollingbourn (with Sarah Bowles) is probably NOT the Robert from Sevenoaks. There were also a number of other Robert Colegates born in this period

4. Baptised 16/08/1752 in Davington, Kent (10 miles from Hollingbourn), the son of William & Mary (family search) (maybe married Esther Blaxland, bap. 14 Jul 1754, Graveney, Kent, England, m. 21 Jun 1781, in Graveney, Kent, England, Robert Colgate. Esther died 17 Apr 1798. )
