Percy was an Australian who enlisted in 1915 and served initially at Gallipoli and then on the Western Front and almost certainly met Rhoda Brown while on leave in the UK. His ancestor Frederick Allen who originated from Kent had emigrated to Australia in pursuit of gold but quickly understood that there was more reliable income in selling goods to miners than in mining. He opened a shop on the goldfields, then a pub, then a brewery and became a man of some substance. Percy & Rhoda had five children. Their grandson Greg provided most of this information. Greg Yeaman is one of my 'Third Cousins once removed'.

(Note: At the time of the 1911 census a James Brown is shown as age 40, born in Godstone, and living at Great Pardon, Essex. He was employed as a 'Butler Domestic' and they had three children but childrrens names make it seem unlikely).

- James Brown was born on 11th November 1847 in Oxted, Surrey and was baptised in Oxted on 16th January 1848. He married Naomi Matilda Shirley. Details of James Brown & Matilda Shirley are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
William Brown
The marriage of William to Jane Colegate was witnessed by Elizabeth Brown and William Gatland!
William & Jane initially lived at Murell Common,(or Merle Common as per modern map), Oxted until about 1831. They then moved to Crowhurst where the next two children were born and then moved back to Murell Common in about 1835. This might have been back to William’s parents house after his father had died (his mother Mary remarried Benjamin Curtis and on the 1841 census Mary & Benjamin Curtis are shown living at the house or next door). This is on the Oxted 1841 census (area south of turnpike road from Limpsfield to Godstone). His son, James Brown, was born at Staffords Wood which is the same area (<0.5 mile). The 1841 census also shows his sister Jane ( aged 20) living with the family at Murell Common with her daughter Mary (4 mnths)
William & Jane lived at Chellows Cottage, Crowhurst in 1851 and is shown on the Crowhurst 1851 Census. This is about two miles from Murell Common. They then lived at Lagham Lodge, Tandridge Lane, Godstone (recorded for both 1861 and 1881 census’s).
He was a farm Labourer, which was also described as a ‘Higgler’.
William Brown could not write as marriage certificate was marked with a cross.
William died at Lowlands, Horne (living with his son James Brown and Matilda) from Chronic Broncitis and Senile Decay. Age on death certificate is shown as 73 which is wrong by 1 year.
Jane Brown (Colegate)
Jane’s age was shown as 30 in 1841 census whereas it should be 35. In later census this age is shown correctly. Jane also could possibly not write as her signature on her son James birth certificate is shown as a mark. However her signature is shown on the marriage certificate. She was deaf at time of 1881 census. She was aged 91 at death as per her death certificate and she died from Senile Decay
