William Brown & Jane Mills were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

William Brown was baptised 13th December 1801 in Lingfield. He was the son of Jacob Brown & Elizabeth Sanders and Jacob was the son of Jacob Brown (1754) & Sarah Wicking. He married Jane Mills on 11th November 1822 in Oxted, Surrey. William initially lived in Staffhouse Wood, Oxted. Later he was the 'Publican' at the Royal Oak in Oxted. William & Jane were both still alive in 1881 census and William died in about November 1881 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 79').

Jane Mills was born about 1805 in Oxted. Jane probably died in about August 1882 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 75').

William & Jane had seven known children:

  1. Lydia Brown was baptised 2nd March 1823 in Oxted, Surrey. She was probably buried on 2nd September 1841 in Oxted ('aged 19')
  2. Mary Brown was baptised 20th March 1825 in Crowhurst, Surrey. She was probably buried on 11th March 1843 in Oxted ('aged 18')
  3. Jane Brown was baptised on 22nd November 1828 in Oxted, Surrey and was born in Murell Common.
  4. Elizabeth Brown (Eliza) was baptised on 3rd October 1830 in Oxted, Surrey and was born in Staffhouse Wood (father was a Higgler).
  5. Ann Brown was born on 25th August in Staffhouse Wood, Oxted and was baptised on 21st September 1834 in Oxted, Surrey (father was a Higgler).
  6. Henry Brown was born on 2nd January in Staffhouse Wood, Oxted and was baptised on 7th February 1836 in Oxted, Surrey (father was a Higgler). Henry married Ellen Fitzerald on 12th April 1858 in Oxted, Surrey (Henry's father shown as William). Ellen was born in 1838, the daughter of James Fitzerald, cordwainer of Limpsfield, but may have originated from Clerkenwell, London. Henry became the 'Publican' at the Royal Oak in Oxted. Henry possibly died in about February 1904 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 68'). Henry & Ellen had three children.
    1. Kate Elizabeth Brown was born in about February 1859 and was baptised on 27th March 1859 in Limpsfield, Surrey.
    2. Jane Brown was born on 1st March and was baptised on 31st March 1867 in Oxted, Surrey
    3. Emma Brown was born on 20th April and was baptised on 23rd May 1869 in Oxted, Surrey
  7. Elizabeth Brown was born in about April 1846 and was baptised on 19th April 1846 in Oxted, Surrey (father shown as a Tradesman, but mother not shown).
