Thomas Browne & Anne were my 10th generation ancestors.

Thomas Browne was the son of Thomas Browne & Katherine Comber. He was baptised on 31st October 1630 in West Hoathly (source 1&2). He was mentioned in his aunt Elizabeth Comber’s will in 1642.(Source 1). Thomas was possibly buried on 28th January 1669 in West Hoathly. (‘of East Grinstead’ - source 2)
Anne was possibly buried on 8th September 1700 in West Hoathly  (‘aged from East Grinstead’ – source 2)

  1. Richard Browne was baptised on 7th February 1651 in East Grinstead. He possibly married Mary and lived in Burstow, Surrey and was buried there on 5th February 1702 .His estate, in Burstow, had a probate inventory undertaken on 16th February 1702 (see below) with Richard shown as 'late of Burstow -wheelwright'. Richard & Mary had six known children.
    1. John Browne was baptised on 31st July 1692 in Burstow, Surrey.
    2. Richard Browne was baptised on 18th February 1694 in Burstow, Surrey
    3. William Browne was baptised on 19th February 1696 in Burstow, Surrey. He married Elizabeth. Details of William Browne & Elizabeth are shown separately.
    4. Mary Browne was baptised on 13th April 1698 in Burstow, Surrey.(Note this date may be wrong)
    5. Thomas Browne was baptised on 13th April 1698 in Burstow, Surrey.
    6. Abraham Browne was baptised on 18th August 1701 in Burstow, Surrey. He possibly married Hannah Allen on 24th April 1726 in Horne, Surrey. He was probably buried on 18th May 1730 in Burstow, Surrey. There was probably one child.
      1. Abraham Browne was buried on 20th June 1731 in Burstow, Surrey ('an infant').
  2. Mary Browne was baptised on 12th April 1653 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
  3. Edward Browne was baptised on 29th April 1655 in East Grinstead. He possibly married Katherine Culpeper (Catherine) on 18th November 1680 in West Hoathly, Sussex..
  4. Sarah Browne was baptised on 9th July 1656 in West Hoathly, Sussex..
  5. Joan Browne was baptised on 10th March 1659 in East Grinstead, Sussex..
  6. Thomas Browne was baptised on 6th July 1662 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Thomas married Susan Lynne. Details of Thomas Browne & Susan Lynne are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  7. Margaret Browne was baptised on 7th October 1666 in East Grinstead, Sussex.,.

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

There is a big question mark over this grouping.

  1. Sarah and Thomas were baptised in West Hoathly whilst all other children were baptised in East Grinstead. However it is thought that both Thomas and Anne died in West Hoathly as the records show 'Thomas from East Grinstead' and 'Anne, aged from East Grinstead’.   This implies that they had only recently moved from East Grinstead. They also could have been living close to the border for the recent births. Sarah and Thomas could have been the children of another Thomas and Anne , but without the Sarah and Thomas births there would be large gaps between the children’s birth dates.
  2. There is a MAJOR uncertainty about identification of the correct Thomas Browne that could fit the head of this family group. An analysis of all Thomas Browne’s born up to 1673, (sources 1-6), with burials and marriages has been produced to help resolve the issue. With a minimum marriage age of 16 and a maximum age at birth of the youngest child of 60, Thomas had to be born between 1606 -1634. The analysis shows that there were three possible Thomas Browne’s. (there was a fourth Thomas Brown born in Rotherfield on 27/03/1631, son of Thomas, but ignored as Rotherfield is not adjacent or near to West Hoathly)
    1. 31/10/1630 born in West Hoathly, son of Thomas & Catherine
    2. 10/05/1629 born in West Hoathly son of Nicholas & Elizabeth
    3. 25/01/1630 born in West Hoathly, son of John & Elizabeth, but assumed buried on 11/10/1630. If this Thomas did not die at this time it was the one above : child (b). Child (c) also has the same grandparents as child (a).
  3. The marriage of Richard Brown (child 1) may appear wrong as Richard is about 40 at the marriage, but he is the youngest Richard born prior to the marriage date. There was another Richard born on 07/10/1648 in West Hoathly son of Richard & Elizabeth.
  4. In general the family name BROWNE was used up to about 1700 and then BROWN became standard
