Jacob Brown was baptised on 3rd March 1754 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was the son of Jacob Brown & Anne Payne.
He married Sarah Wicking on 9th May 1778 in Lingfield, Surrey.
Jacob was buried on 31st May 1835 in Edenbridge, Kent ('aged 81')
Sarah Wicking was baptised on 7th January 1757 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was the daughter of William Wicking & Phoebe Farnes.
NOTE: Jacob Brown is a key ancestor as quite a large percentage of Brown's in South East Surrey, mid Sussex & South West Kent are probably descended from him. If anyone reading this page has any further information on the family group details given below, or can correct any errors, then please let me know.
Jacob & Sarah had five known children:
- James Brown was baptised on 15th November 1778 in Lingfield, Surrey. He probably married Elizabeth Sergeant (shown as Sergent) on 5th January 1802 in Lingfield, Surrey. Elizabeth was baptised on 7th May 1780 in Lingfield, Surrey, the daughter of Richard & Hannah. (who had children Richard, John, Elizabeth, Sarah, Thomas & Mary with a variety of surnames shown - Sergeant, Sergeson, Sargent). James & Elizabeth were both alive in 1841 and they had four children:
- Jacob Brown was probably baptised on 4th April 1802 in Edenbridge, Kent (Source is IGI & unconfirmed). He married Mary Ann Nightingale . Details of Jacob Brown & Mary Ann Nightingale are shown separately.
- James Brown was probably baptised on 1st January 1804 in Edenbridge, Kent (Source is IGI & unconfirmed). He probably married firstly Mary Turner on 13th September 1828 in Lingfield, Surrey. James & Mary had one child (i). He married secondly Sarah Skinner on 4th May 1833 in Limpsfield, Surrey. Sarah Skinner was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Skinner and was baptised on 7th March 1813 Westerham Kent. James & Sarah had three children (ii-iv). James was buried on 18th April 1841 in Limpsfield, Surrey 'aged 37 years'.
After James died, Sarah married William King and had a second family in Westerham (shown on
1851 Census for Westerham with two of her 'Brown' children with them).
- Mary Ann Brown was baptised on 5th April 1829 in Limpsfield, Surrey. (PRT show parents as Jas & Mary nee Nightingale- see jacob Brown above, but assume error)
- William Brown was baptised on 30th November 1834 in Limpsfield, Surrey. William possbly died in about May 1904 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 70').
- James Brown was baptised on 4th June 1837 in Limpsfield, Surrey (parents shown as Jas & Sarah from Westerham).
- Esther Brown (Hester) was born in about February 1840 and was baptised on 15th March 1840 in Limpsfield, Surrey.
- John Brown was probably baptised on 12th May 1805 in Edenbridge, Kent (Source is IGI & unconfirmed). He possibly married Harriet Gratwick on 4th July 1830 in Lingfield, Surrey.
- William Brown was probably baptised on 17th January 1808 in Edenbridge, Kent (Source is IGI & unconfirmed). He married Elizabeth Illman. Details of William Brown & Elizabeth Illman are shown separately.
- Jacob Brown was baptised on 30th September 1781 in Lingfield, Surrey. He had married Elizabeth Sanders on 8th October 1801 in Lingfield and prior to that he had been living in Heaver, Kent. Jacob & Elizabeth had one child.
Jacob was buried in Lingfield on 27th January 1804 ('aged 25').
- William Brown was baptised 13th December 1801 in Lingfield and he married Jane Mills. Details of William Brown & Jane Mills are shown separately.
- William Brown was baptised on 18th January 1784 in Lingfield, Surrey. He married Mary Tidy. Details of William Brown & Mary Tidy are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
- John Brown was baptised on 20th August 1786 in Lingfield, Surrey. He possibly married Ann Edwards on 16th April 1809 in Edenbridge, Kent. John & Ann had five children. John was a shoemaker
- Mary Brown was baptised on 5th June 1814 in Edenbridge, Kent
- John Brown was baptised on 5th June 1814 in Edenbridge, Kent
- Joseph Brown was baptised on 5th June 1814 in Edenbridge, Kent. He probably died in May 1875 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 60').
- Ann Brown was baptised on 27th August 1815 in Edenbridge, Kent
- Edward Brown was baptised on 20th October 1816 in Edenbridge, Kent
- Robert Brown was baptised on 28th December 1788 in Lingfield, Surrey. He probably married Ann Weller on 29th January 1813 in Edenbridge, Kent. Robert, (who was a labourer), & Ann lived in High Street, Edenbridge in 1841 and they had nine children. Robert was buried on 1st January 1845 in Edenbridge, Kent (' aged 56')
and Ann was buried on 5th December 1858 in Edenbridge, Kent (' aged 71, from Westerham').
- Robert Brown was baptised on 23rd January 1814 in Edenbridge, Kent. He married Ann. Robert & Ann had one known child.
- Harriet Brown (or Harriot) was baptised on 30th April 1837 in Edenbridge, Kent.
- Sarah Brown was baptised on 16th April 1815 in Edenbridge, Kent. She married William Hollands on 16th April 1836 in Edenbridge, Kent.
- William Brown was baptised on 30th June 1816 in Edenbridge, Kent. William married Elizabeth. Details of William Brown & Elizabeth are shown separately.
- Jane Brown was baptised on 23rd November 1817 in Edenbridge, Kent. Jane married Charles Holland on 30th November 1839. She had an child
prior to marriage (but probably married father, due to name choice)
- Charles Brown was baptised on 9th June 1839 in Edenbridge, Kent.
- Elizabeth Brown (Eliza) was baptised on 26th December 1818 in Edenbridge, Kent. She probably died young
- Ann Brown was baptised on 19th December 1822 in Edenbridge, Kent. She had an illegitimate child.
- Elizabeth Brown (Eliza) was baptised on 12th March 1837 in Edenbridge, Kent.
- Harriet Brown was born in about 1824 in Edenbridge, Kent. She was buried there on 6th March 1844 ('aged 20').
- Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 9th August 1822 in Edenbridge, Kent. She married James Malyan
- John Brown was baptised on 31st March 1826 in Edenbridge, Kent and he was buried there on 13th September 1826 ('aged 6 months').
