Enoch Browne & Eleanor Grose were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

Enoch Browne was possibly born around 1560 probably in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was the son of Andrew Brown (& Agnes) who was the son of John Browne & Joan. He was named in his fathers ‘Will’ of 1595 and he was a Yeoman and Parish Clerk of West Hoathly. He possibly married Eleanor Grose around 1584 (In his 'Will' he mentions his brother in law Thomas Grose but he may have been husband of a sister). He left a will dated 9th April 1607 and he was buried on 8th May 1614 in West Hoathly, Sussex and his wife Eleanor was executor. He was the West Hoathly Parish Clerk at the time of death.

Eleanor Grose's birth details are not known.

  1. Enoch Browne was possibly born around 1585 probably in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father’s ‘Will’ of 1607. He had been mentioned in cousin George Brown’s ‘Will’ of 1614 (called 'Junior') and in cousin Edward Browne’s ‘Will’ of 1627 (called 'Elder'). He married Anne. Enoch was buried on 18th May 1645 in West Hoathly, Sussex . Enoch & Anne had five known children.
    1. Enoch Browne was born about 1606 in West Hoathly, Sussex (derived as no birth record exists). He married Elizabeth Rootes on 22nd January 1630 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Enoch was probably buried on 27th March 1648 in West Hoathly, Sussex and he was the West Hoathly Parish Clerk at the time of death. They had six known children but there may be other children 1640-1645 due to gap in register.
      1. George Browne was buried on 13th March 1630 in West Hoathly, Sussex (‘Son of Enoch & Elizabeth’)
      2. Enoch Browne was baptised on 28th October 1630 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was probably buried on 25th August 1661 in West Hoathly, Sussex and he was the West Hoathly Parish Clerk at the time of his death.
      3. Mary Browne was baptised on 26th December 1632 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
      4. Anne Browne was baptised on 6th December 1635 in West Hoathly, Sussex
      5. Denise Browne was baptised on 10th November 1639 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She married William Rippington on 27th April 1665 in West Hoathly (shown as Dennes).
      6. Margaret Browne was baptised on 30th September 1646 in West Hoathly, Sussex
    2. Andrew Browne was baptised on 11th June 1608 in West Hoathly, Sussex (no parents shown). He probably married Mary and they had seven known children.
      1. Andrew Browne was baptised on 15th October 1637 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
      2. John Browne was baptised on 4th November 1639 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He possibly married Ann Payne. Details of John Browne & Ann Payne are shown separately.
      3. Gershom Browne was baptised on 5th May 1642 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
      4. Thomas Browne was baptised on 12th May 1646 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
      5. Joseph Browne was baptised on 26th February 1648 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
      6. Elizabeth Browne was baptised on 8th September 1652 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
      7. Gershom Browne was baptised on 6th March 1660 in West Hoathly, Sussex. This may be a baptism of the Gershom born in 1642.
    3. George Browne was baptised on 6th May 1610 in West Hoathly, Sussex (‘son of Enoch’). He was mentioned in his Uncle George Browne's 'Will' of 1614 as his godson. He married Ann Whealer. Details of George Browne & Ann Whealer are shown separately.
    4. Agnes Browne was baptised on 30th April 1615 in West Hoathly, Sussex .
    5. Charles Browne was baptised on 25th January 1618 in West Hoathly, Sussex
    6. Richard Browne was baptised on 5th October 1623 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He possibly married Elizabeth Champion (Champian) on 7th October 1647 In Burstow, Surrey (Richard shown as from East Grinstead & Elizabeth from Nutfield). Richard was probably buried in East Grinstead on 3rd April 1667 and Elizabeth was buried there on 29th March 1667 ('wife of Richard'). Richard & Elizabeth probably had three children.
      1. Richard Browne was baptised on 7th October 1648 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
      2. Elizabeth Browne was baptised on 1st January 1650 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
      3. Mary Browne was baptised on 15th May 1657 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
    7. Catherine Browne was baptised on 5th October 1628 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
  2. Hanna Browne was possibly born around 1589 probably in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father’s ‘Will’ of 1607.
  3. Andrew Browne was possibly born probably on 24th June 1591 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father’s ‘Will’ of 1607. He married Margaret Cripps on 3rd May 1621 in West Hoathly, Sussex.  Margaret was buried on 31st December 1634 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('wife of Andrew').
  4. Anne Browne (Anna) was possibly born around 1593 probably in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father’s ‘Will’ of 1607 as Anna.

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. Where 'Years of birth' are shown then these are estimates and were NOT quoted by the Sussex Genealogy source 1. They are based on available facts and generally assume 1st child  is born a minimum 25 years after fathers birth and subsequent children are born at 2 yearly intervals. Where an exact date has been quoted then this is usually from the Parish Register.
  2. In general the family name BROWNE was used up to about 1700 and then BROWN became standard
  3. SxG- Source 1 has a number of errors identified
    1. All dates shown between 01/01 and 24/03 up to year 1750 usually have the year shown as that of the previous year (Exceptions are: a) burial of George 1630, b) marriage of Enoch to Elizabeth Rootes shown as 1630)
    2. There are some occasional slight date errors- see name search detail for errors. a) burial of Enoch shown as 1613 and not 1614
    3. Shows Enoch marrying secondly Elizabeth Rootes whereas this marriage was probably by a son Enoch (no baptism found), otherwise he would be over 60 years at the birth of his youngest child. Also death of George in 1630 is likely to be son of this Enoch & Elizabeth and not George of 1610 as shown as 'son of Enoch & Elizabeth'. This also reconfirms Enoch as son of Enoch as otherwise the father would have two children named George.
    4. Shows Andrew son of Enoch senior (1560) marrying Mary and having children Andrew & John. This list of children was incomplete and meant that Andrew was not the correct father as would be too old. Instead it is likely that the correct father was Andrew son of Enoch junior (1585) (but no parents shown on baptism).

Wills
  1. Enoch Browne left a ‘Will’ that was dated 9th April 1607 and was proved on 28th May 1614 (LEWES A14.P231). It mentions his wife Eleanor; sons Enoch & Andrew; daughters Hanna & Anna; brother in law Thomas Grose; brother Andrew and witness George Browne. The link is to a hard to read copy of the will.
