James Stripp (Streape) & Sarah Daniel were one of my 5th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

James Stripp (Streape) was baptised on 3rd October 1784 in Horne, Surrey and was the son of William & Eleanor Stripp (Streape). He married sarah Daniel on 7th February 1809 in Horne, Surrey (shown as Streape). James died on 25th June 1867 in Godstone, Surrey ('aged 88' !!).

Sarah Daniel was born on 1st February 1789 in Horne, Surrey. She was the daughter of Thomas & Mary Daniel. Sarah probably died in about May 1857 in Godstone RD, Surrey.

  1. William Stripp (Strip) was born in about 1810 probably in Horne, Surrey. He married Mary Shirley (see William Shirley 1766 family ref 7C) on 4th September 1855 in Blindley Heath, Surrey .William Strip was shown as aged 46 (born 1809/10) living in Blindley Heath and his father was James. The marriage was witnessed by Robert Wood & Sarah Holmes (probably his sister who married William Holmes). Mary died on 23rd May 1859 in Godstone, Surrey. Cause of death was consumption and Mary was shown as aged 28 (but she was probably 27). William & Mary had one child (A). Subsequently William moved to Sutton, Surrey and possibly had a number of children with differant women. It is unclear whether he married them or even whether he was the true father. William died on 16th January 1873 in Sutton, Surrey (shown as Strip).
    1. Sarah Ann Stripp was born in about February 1858 possibly in Lingfield Surrey, Surrey (Godstone RD).
    2. Ellen Dora Stripp (Strip) was born on 11th July and she was baptised on 10th August 1862 in Sutton, Surrey. Her mother was Elizabeth Heath. . (Note: Ellen may not be a daughter of this William, as at marriage father was described as a coachman- see family ref 4A below)
    3. William Leonard Stripp was born on 27th February and he was baptised on 9th July 1865 in Sutton, Surrey. Birth cerificate shows his mother as Elizabeth Stripp formerly Furmiger & father's occupation as 'Labourer to a Veterinary'.
    4. Elizabeth Lydia Stripp was born about 1868 in Sutton, Surrey. Her mother was unknown, but her marriage certificate shows her as age 20 in April 1889 & deceased father's occupation as 'Veterinary Surgeon'. She married Charles Edgar Ewers on 22nd April 1889 in Wandsworth, London (shown as Strip). Elizabeth died on 14th May 1931 in Battersea, London. (The following information was provided by Carole Leith (millcat@btinternet.com) who is a direct descendant of Elizabeth Stripp). Elizabeth & Charles had a daughter Florence Annie Ewers who married William Henry White. Their son William Henry White married Margery Edith Barber and had a daughter Carole.
    5. Charles Andrew Stripp was born on 27th August 1870 in Sutton, Surrey. Birth cerificate shows his mother as Sarah Elizabeth Stripp formerly Cantwell!! & father's occupation as 'Veterinary Labourer' and living at West Street Sutton.
    6. Henry Stripp (Harry) was born on 25th November 1871 in Sutton, Surrey. Birth cerificate shows his mother as Sarah Stripp formerly Shepherd & father's occupation as 'Veterinary Labourer' and living at West Street Sutton. He married Mary Mead on 3rd September 1894 in Wandsworth, London (registry office-shown as Harry Strip). Henry & Mary had nine children including William Henry, Ivy May, Lillian Blanche, Alice Dorothy, Donald Harry, Henry Leonard, Jessie Winifred and:
      1. Richard Charles Stripp. He married Violet Mary Ross and had children including:
        1. Pamela Violet Stripp. She married Peter Derek Williams who had children including:
          1. Rebecca Williams. Rebecca Williams is one of my 'Fourth Cousins'. Rebecca has supplied a lot of the later information about Strip's & Shirley's and she has a lot more information about later generations which is not shown on this site (see source 9).
  2. Mary Stripp (Streape) was born on 8th February and was baptised on 10th March 1811 in Horne, Surrey. (father James is shown as from Copthorne). She possibly firstly married James Mansfield on 7th April 1833 in Newington, Lambeth, London (shown as Strip). She probably secondly married George James Steer on 15th November 1835 in Newington, Lambeth, London (Mary was a widow). Mary & George had eight children. (source 9)
    1. Sarah Steer was born in about 1838 in Mitcham, Surrey.
    2. George Henry Steer was born in about February 1840 in Clerkenwell RD, London.
    3. Edward James Steer was born in about August 1841 iin Clerkenwell RD, London.
    4. Richard Frederick Steer was born in about August 1845 in Clerkenwell RD, London.
    5. Philip Alfred Steer was born in about November 1847 in Clerkenwell RD, London.
    6. Mary Ann Steer was born on 28th June 1849 in Clerkenwell, London. She lived with Uncle William (see family ref 1) in 1861 in Sutton (see 1861 census-5).
    7. Francis Steer was born on 21st September 1851 in Clerkenwell, London. He possibly married Sarah Ann Cutts. Francis & Sarah had three children ( Mary Ann, Francis John & Arthur Thomas). (source 9)
    8. Charles John Steer was born in about February 1854 in Clerkenwell RD, London. He possibly married Annie Steer. Charles & Annie had three children in Clerkenwell, London ( Charles, Edward & Ellen). (source 9)
  3. Thomas Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 13th June 1813 in Horne, Surrey. He married Mary Ann Ledbetter on 10th September 1836 in Horne, Surrey (shown as Strip). Mary Ann was baptised on 31st May 1818 in Worth, Sussex, the daughter of William & Sarah Libbeter. Thomas possibly died in about May 1870 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 60'). Thomas & Mary had ten known children.
    1. Lucy Ann Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 16th August 1840 in Horne, Surrey. She probably married Ephraim Austin in about November 1861 in Steyning RD, Sussex. Lucy & Ephraim had four children ( Harry Levi, Samuel Thomas, Kate & Albert Charles) (source 9).
    2. Thomas Edward Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 2nd October 1842 in Horne, Surrey. He probably married Emma Adams on 21st September 1872 in Sompting, Sussex. Thomas & Emma had six children ( Annie, Emma, John, Edward, Louisa & Harry). (source 9).
    3. Hannah Stripp was baptised on 6th April 1845 in Godstone, Surrey. She probably married Augustus Sabine on 13th December 1869 in Dartford, Kent. Hannah & Augustus had ten children ( Augustus G A, Marion Sarah A, Harry, Alfred Thomas, Alice Gertrude, Arthur Franklin, Albert Louis, Frederick George, Frank Ernest, & Christina). (source 9)
    4. George Henry Stripp was baptised on 5th December 1847 in Godstone, Surrey.
    5. Susan Stripp was baptised on 3rd February 1850 in Godstone, Surrey.
    6. John Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 1st May 1853 in Godstone, Surrey (Source is IGI and is shown as Edward John, but census shows as John).
    7. William Stripp was born on 6th June 1855 in Godstone, Surrey. He possibly married Elizabeth Sherlock on 1st June 1878 in Godstone, Surrey. William & Elizabeth had four children ( Harriet, Percy, James & Emily) (source 9).
    8. Sarah Clara Stripp was born on 29th June 1857 and was baptised on 14th March 1858 in Godstone, Surrey. She possibly married James Terry in about November 1880 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
    9. Edward Stripp was baptised on 10th June 1860 in Godstone, Surrey. He probably married Ellen White in about November 1886 in Croydon RD, Surrey. Edward & Ellen had three children ( Edward John, Sydney, & Arthur James). (source 9).
    10. Ellen Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 13th September 1863 in Godstone, Surrey.
  4. Eleanor Stripp (Strip) was born on the 13th August 1815 and was baptised on 10th September 1815 in Horne, Surrey. She married firstly Edward Gibbs on 19th November 1835 in East Grinstead RD (shown as Strip). Eleanor & Edward had one child (A) and Edward died in about 1835 in East Grinstead RD. She married secondly Charles Gibbs on 2nd October 1839 in Hadlow, Kent. (On marriage certificate father shown as James). Eleanor & Charles had one child (B), and Charles died in about February 1855. She married thirdly James Page in about August 1855 in Reigate RD, Surrey. In 1851 census, Eleanor is shown living with James Page in Burstow, as a Housekeeper (with her two children & Charles) and in 1861 as his wife. In 1871 Ellen D Strip, aged 9, is staying with the family in Copthorne, and in 1881 Elizabeth Stripp (niece aged 12- see ref 1D) is staying with them. Eleanor possibly died in about November 1889 in Worth, Sussex. (source 9)
    1. Sarah Gibbs was baptised on 15th January 1837 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She married Edward Thomas Payne in 1855 probably at Burstow. They lived in Worth and Sarah possibly died in about May 1905 in Copthorne, Surrey. Edward & Sarah had thirteen children (William James, Charles, Ellen S, Mary Ann, Dorothy Ann Elizabeth, James, Edward Thomas, Lucy A, Eliza, George, Sophia, Ernest & Martha). Their eldest living child, Charles Payne married Ellen Dorah Stripp ( see family ref 1B) on 2nd October 1881 at All Saints, Crawley Down, Sussex. On the marriage certificate Ellen's age was shown as 21 (although she was probably only 19) and her father was shown as William Stripp, Coachman.
    2. Charles Gibbs was baptised on 14th February 1840 in Ashurst Wood, East Grinstead, Sussex.(on birth certificate mother shown as Ellender Gibbes, formerly Striep).
  5. James Stripp (Strip) was born on the 28th July 1817 and was baptised on 24th August 1817 in Horne, Surrey. He married Mary Ann Mitchell in about November 1844 in Godstone RD, Surrey (shown as Strip). Mary Ann was born in about 1820 in East Grinstead, Sussex. James subsequently moved to Sutton, Surrey and his brother William stayed with him (see 1851 census). James possibly died in about May 1883 in Epsom RD, Surrey. James & Mary Ann had nine children.     1. William Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 4th May 1845 in Godstone, Surrey. He possibly married Charlotte Louisa Biddle in about February 1869 in Camberwell RD, Surrey. William possibly died in about November 1897 in Godstone RD ('aged 52').
    2. Sophia Stripp was baptised on 10th March 1847 in Godstone, Surrey.
    3. Mary Ann Stripp (Strip) was born on 5th July and was baptised on 5th August 1849 in Godstone, Surrey.
    4. Susanna Stripp was born in about November 1851 probably in Sutton, Surrey (Epsom RD).
    5. James Stripp was born on 3rd September and was baptised on 2nd October 1853 in Sutton, Surrey. He was probably buried there on 7th January 1855.
    6. George Edward Stripp was born on 14th October and was baptised on 11th November 1855 in Sutton, Surrey. He probably married Emily Sackley in about February 1885 in Kinston upon Thames RD, Surrey. George probably died in about February 1912 in Kingston RD, Surrey ('aged 56'- shown as Strip)
    7. Sarah Ellen Stripp was born in about November 1857 probably in Sutton, Surrey (Epsom RD).
    8. Lucy Stripp was born on 22nd September and was baptised on 16th October 1859 in Sutton, Surrey. She possibly married James Bowden in 1881 in Sutton, Surrey. Lucy possibly died in about February 1896 in Sutton, Surrey.
    9. Thomas Arthur Stripp was born in about December 1861 and was baptised on 12th Januaary 1862 in Sutton, Surrey. He possibly married Sarah Buckfield in about November 1885 in Epsom RD, Surrey (shown as Strip). Thomas possibly died in about August 1901 in Epsom RD, Surrey ('aged 43').
    10. Jesse Stripp was born in about February 1864 in Epsom RD, Surrey.
  6. Sarah Stripp (Strip) was born on the 13th January 1820 and was baptised on 20th February 1820 in Horne, Surrey. She maybe possibly had a baseborn child (A). She subsequently possibly married William Holmes in about November 1841 in Godstone RD, Surrey (shown as Strip), but had no children with him.
    1. Samuel Edward Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 14th January 1838 in Horne, Surrey.(father not shown, but mother shown as Sarah). He married Julia Budgen on 19th September 1863 in Godstone, Surrey (shown as Strip). Samuel died in about February 1894 in East Grinstead RD, Sussex ('aged 54'). Samuel & Julia had eight children in Lingfield, Surrey (Clara Eliza, Sarah, Samuel, Alice, Martha Kate, Arthur Thomas, Ernest Herbert & Ethel Florence) (source 9).
  7. Edward Stripp (Strip) was born on the 8th September 1822 and was baptised on 6th October 1822 in Horne, Surrey. He possibly married Amelia Constable in about May 1845 in Cuckfield RD , Sussex (shown as Strip)(but also see Edward son of Richard son of William 1739). Edward & Amelia had no children and lived in a variety of houses in Balcombe lane, Balcombe, Sussex (nos 7,11,17). In the various census he was shown as from Horne/Godstone and was born in 1823/24. Edward died in about February 1909 in Cuckfield RD, Sussex ('aged 86')
  8. Elizabeth Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 20th June 1824 in Horne, Surrey.(James is shown as from Copthorne). She married Thomas Prevett on 12th August 1843 in Worth, Sussex (shown as Strip). Elizabeth died on 11th August 1887 in Copthorne, Surrey. Elizabeth & Thomas had nine children. (source 9)
    1. Amelia Prevett was born in about 1844 in Worth, Sussex. She married James Longford and they had one child (Elizabeth Ellen).
    2. Sophia Prevett was born in about 1847 in Worth, Sussex.
    3. Mary Ann Prevett was born in about 1848 in Worth, Sussex.
    4. Edward Prevett was born in about 1851 in Worth, Sussex.
    5. Thomas Prevett was born in about 1853 in Worth, Sussex.
    6. James Prevett was born in about November 1854 in Worth RD, Sussex.
    7. Eleanor Elizabeth Prevett was born in about November 1856 in Worth RD, Sussex.
    8. William Prevett was born in about 1859 in Worth, Sussex. He possibly died on 18th July 1922 in Worth, Sussex.
    9. Sarah Ann Prevett was born in about 1864 in Worth, Sussex. She possibly died on 18th August 1943 in Sussex.
  9. Lucy Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 29th October 1826 in Horne, Surrey. She possibly married John Wood in about November 1847 in Godstone RD, Surrey (shown as Strip). Lucy possibly died in about 1891 in Ockley, Surrey. Lucy & John had seven children. (source 9)
    1. Mary Ann Wood was born in about 1848 in Godstone, Surrey.
    2. Ellen Wood was born in about 1851 in Godstone, Surrey.
    3. John Wood was born in about 1853 in Godstone, Surrey.

  11. Jesse Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 14th December 1834 in Horne, Surrey. He was still alive in 1901, living in Meron, Surrey.

General:

The families of Stripp and Shirley tend to very interconnected with marriages between them and also the families living adjacent to each other. The families tend to be based around the Surrey/Sussex border at Copthorne, Horne (Frogit Heath) and Blindley Heath. Looking at the parish map one can see that the parishes of Tandridge, Godstone & Horne all merge at this point and also are adjacent to Worth & East Grinstead. Frogit Heath is actually in Horne & Godstone parishes and Blindley Heath is actually in Horne, Godstone, Tandridge & Lingfield parishes. The location is some distant from the actual villages of Tandridge and to a lesser extent Godstone. Thus it is likely that the family ancestors arise from Sussex.

James Stripp (Streape):

In the 1851 census James was described as a labourer as he was on his son William's marriage certificate. James died from a diseased heart & paralysis and was shown as a farm labourer at that time (source 9).The informant was James Shirley (see family ref 10).

Edward Payne: (see family ref 4A: Information supplied by Peter Weaver & Source 9)

Edward Thomas Payne was verger of Copthorne Church from the time is was built. He died one winter Sunday night when tolling the bell to summon the parishioners. He slipped on the tiled floor and banged his head. He died a few days later on 17th December 1906 ( source: Payne Family Bible ). He is buried at Copthorne, but not sure where. Also buried there are two of his children, Martha and Ernest. His son, Charles was also the verger.

  1. There were numerous differant spellings of "Stripp" in the parish registers eg (Strip, Stripp, Strype, Stripe, Streape, Strape, Streap). 'Streape' tended to be used up to about 1800, 'Strip' was then normally used to about 1840 and then 'Stripp' became the standard.
  2. There are no parish records of Stripp/Streape found in the adjacent parishes of Burstow (pre1700), Charlwood, Horley, Limpsfield or Worth
  3. James and his earlier family were all called Streape. He was married as Streape. However all of James's children (except Mary) were baptised Strip but Sophia Strip's marriage certificate shows her as Stripp as do the birth certificate's of Matilda & Sophia Shirley ( mother's former name).
