  2. Matthew Speight was born in about 1776, probably in Rothwell, Yorkshire (derived as no birth record found). He was buried on 10th June 1800 in Rothwell, Yorkshire ('son of Benjamin of Ouswell Green, aged 24')
  3. Thomas Speight was baptised on 24th June 1781 in Rothwell, Yorkshire (son of Benjamin & Elizabeth of Carleton). He married Sarah Blakely on 19th March 1804 in Rothwell, Yorkshire. Thomas & Sarah had four children.
    1. Joseph Speight was buried on 2nd September 1804 in Rothwell, Yorkshire ('son of Thomas of Rothwell').
    2. Esther Speight was born on 31st October and was baptised on 24th November 1805 in Rothwell, Yorkshire.
    3. Thomas Speight was born on 12th December 1808 and was baptised on 29th January 1809 in Rothwell, Yorkshire. He was probably buried there on 23rd May 1809 ('son of Thomas of Rothwell')
    4. Benjamin Speight was born on 29th March and was baptised on 10th June 1810 in Rothwell, Yorkshire.

  9. Mary Speight was born on the 27th November 1797 and was baptised on 14th January 1798 in Rothwell, Yorkshire (dau of Benjamin & Elizabeth of Carleton). Mary was buried there on 26th September 1804 ('dau of Benjamin of Ouswell Green, aged 6')

  1. Carleton is about 1.5km south from Rothwell and Ouswell Green is a further 1 km south from Carleton. Thorp is about 2km west of them all. Middleton is about 1km north of Thorpe. Rothwell lies about 5km south east of Leeds and about 10km north west of Castleford. Oulton is about 1.5km west of Rothwell. Carleton, Ouswell Green, Thorpe, Middleton & Oulton are all in the parish of Rothwell.
  2. The adjacent parishes to Rothwell all contain some Speights but particular large numbers are in Leeds, Woodkirk & Wakefield.
  3. For the period 1737 - 1758 (age at marriage of 16 to age 60 at birth of youngest child), there was one Benjamin Speight born in Rothwell, One was born in the adjacent parishes (Woodkirk), two were born in the surrounding parishes (Dewsbury), and none were born in more distant parishes. The one identified is likely to be correct.
