William Shirley & Sarah Greenaway were one of my 6th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

William Shirley was baptised on 29th March 1766 in Godstone, Surrey. He was the son of William Shirley & Ann. He married Sarah Greenaway on 25th October 1790 in Godstone, Surrey. William was probably buried on 23rd November 1850 in Godstone, Surrey '(aged 86').

Sarah Greenaway (on marriage name shown as Grinaway) was born in about 1766 in East Grinstead, Sussex (census shows her not of Surrey). She was probably the daughter of William & Elizabeth Greenaway of East Grinstead. They had seven children baptised from 1757 to 1764, but no birth record of Sarah has been found. Sarah was probably buried on 3rd August 1850 ('aged 85') in Godstone, Surrey.

William & Sarah had possibly eight children.

  1. William Shirley was baptised on 17th April 1792 in Godstone, Surrey. Possibly married firstly Hannah Thomas on 23rd April 1814 in Tandridge, Surrey. He married secondly Jane before 1841. William possibly died in about May 1872 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 82'). William & Hannah had five children.
    1. Mary Shirley was baptised on 2nd July 1815 in Tandrige, Surrey.
    2. James Shirley was born about 1817 in Tandridge, Surrey. He married Mary Woodgate in about August 1838 in Godstone RD, Surrey. Mary was born in about 1819 in Godstone, Surrey and probably died in about August 1869 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 49'). James & Mary had at least six children (but children v-vii are guesses due to gap -parents not known).
      1. Mary Ann Shirley was baptised on 1st September 1839 in Tandrige, Surrey.
      2. George Shirley was baptised on 4th August 1841 in Tandrige, Surrey.
      3. Emma Shirley was baptised on 11th December 1842 in Tandrige, Surrey.
      4. James Shirley was baptised on 27th December 1846 in Tandrige, Surrey and he died in about February 1851 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
      5. James Shirley was possibly born in about May 1853 in Tandrige, Surrey (Godstone RD) and he died in about May 1853 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
      6. Charles Edwin Shirley was born in about November 1855 in Tandrige, Surrey (Godstone RD).
      7. Ellen Shirley was born in about August 1858 in Tandrige, Surrey (Godstone RD).
    3. Hannah Shirley was born about 1829 in Tandridge, Surrey. She probably married William Goodwin in about February 1851 in Godstone RD, Surrey. William & Hannah had maybe possibly seven children. Hannah possibly had a child (Elizabeth) baseborn in 1848 in Tandridge.
    4. Sarah Shirley was born about 1831 in Tandrige, Surrey.
    5. William Shirley was born about 1833 in Tandrige, Surrey.
  2. Mary Ann Shirley was baptised on 18th May 1794 in Godstone, Surrey. She possibly died in about 1839 in Tandridge, Surrey.
  3. James Shirley was baptised on 14th February 1796 in Godstone, Surrey. He married Philadelphia Bones. Details of James Shirley & Philadelphia Bones are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  4. Sarah Shirley was baptised on 22nd July 1798 in Godstone, Surrey. She probably had a child, baseborn.
    1. Mary Shirley was baptised on 29th October 1815 in Godstone, Surrey.
  5. John Shirley was possibly born in about 1800 (derived as no birth record found, so may not be son of William) probably in Godstone, Surrey. He married Sarah Bysh on 20th December 1823 in Godstone, Surrey. Sarah was born in about 1803 and she possibly died in about February 1876 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 73'). John was living with his son John in 1881 and he died in about May 1882 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 82'). John and Sarah had one child.
    1. John Shirley was baptised on 22nd October 1824 in Godstone, Surrey. John married Sarah. Details of John Shirley & Sarah are shown separely.
  6. Thomas Shirley was baptised on 5th April 1801 in Godstone, Surrey.
  7. Richard Shirley was born on 24th September and was baptised on 23rd October 1803 in Godstone, Surrey.
  8. Robert Shirley was born on 3rd April and was baptised on 3rd May 1807 in Godstone, Surrey. He possibly married Mary Charman (or Mary Roffey-source 9???) on 20th March 1830 in Godstone, Surrey. Both Robert & Mary were both still alive in 1891 and were shown as living with his son Matthew. Robert probably died in about May 1891 in Godstone RD, Surrey (aged 88).
    1. James Shirley was born about 1828 in Godstone, Surrey
    2. Frederick Shirley was baptised on 13th February 1831 in Godstone, Surrey, and was buried on 24th April 1831 in Godstone, Surrey, (aged 13 weeks).
    3. Mary Shirley was baptised on 3rd June 1832 in Godstone, Surrey. She married William Strip on 4th September 1855 in Blindley Heath, Surrey (see James Stripp 1784 family ref 1- also details of family & certificate).
    4. Amos Shirley was baptised on 8th November 1835 in Godstone, Surrey. He married Lucy Stripp Details of Amos Shirley & Lucy Stripp are shown separately.
    5. John Shirley was baptised on 1st April 1838 in Godstone, Surrey. He married Sarah Maria Wells on about August 1858 in Godstone RD, Surrey. Sarah was born in about 1836 in Wadhurst, Sussex. In 1881 John & Sarah were living next door to his brother Amos Shirley at Alma Cottage, Blindley Heath Common. Sarah possibly died in about February 1915 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('Sarah M - aged 76') and John possibly died in about May 1917 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 79').
    6. Thomas Shirley was baptised on 21st February 1841 in Godstone, Surrey. He maybe possibly married Jane (born about 1835-Rye, Sussex) and lived in Bromley, Kent in 1881
    7. Matthew Shirley was born in about May 1845 in Godstone RD, Surrey. He married Esther Winchester in about May 1866 in Godstone RD, Surrey. Esther was born in about 1846 in Bletchingly. In 1871 they were living at Stumpsgrove, Horne but in 1891 were living at Martins Cottage, Blindley Heath. In 1881 they were living at Blindley Heath and neighbours were Robert & Mary Shirley and William & Eliza Strip. Matthew died in about August 1909 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 65'). Matthew & Esther had at least ten children mostly in Blindley Heath (shown as Tandridge), Surrey.
      1. Mary Jane Shirley was born in about November 1866 in Horne, Surrey (Godstone RD).
      2. Thomas Shirley was born in about August 1868 in Horne, Surrey (Godstone RD).
      3. Sarah Shirley was born in about November 1870 in Horne, Surrey (Godstone RD).
      4. Annie Shirley was born in about May 1875 in Tandridge, Surrey (Godstone RD).
      5. Matthew Shirley was born in about August 1877 in Tandridge, Surrey (Godstone RD).
      6. Emily Maria Shirley was born in about February 1880 in Tandridge, Surrey (Godstone RD).
      7. George Shirley was born in about 1882 in Tandridge, Surrey.
      8. Fanny Shirley was born in about 1884 in Tandridge, Surrey.
      9. Frederick John Shirley was born in about 1887 in Tandridge, Surrey (Godstone RD).
      10. Caroline Shirley was born in about 1889 in Tandridge, Surrey.

General:

The families of Strip/Streape and Shirley tend to very interconnected with marriages between them and also the families living adjacent to each other. The families tend to be based around the Surrey/Sussex border at Copthorne, Horne (Frogit Heath) and Blindley Heath. Looking at the parish map one can see that the parishes of Tandridge, Godstone & Horne all merge at this point and also are adjacent to Worth & East Grinstead. Frogit Heath is actually in Horne & Godstone parishes and Blindley Heath is actually in Horne, Godstone, Tandridge & Lingfield parishes. The location is some distant from the actual villages of Tandridge and to a lesser extent Godstone. Thus it is likely that the family ancestors arise from Sussex.

Robert Shirley:

In 1851 Robert Shirley was living next door to James Shirley 1828 & Sophia and also to James Strip 1784 and Sarah. In 1891 he was living in Warkins Cottage, Blindley Heath with his son Matthew & family. His close neigbour at that time was William Strip 1840 (see William Streape 1715)
