John Shirley & Sarah were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

John Shirley was baptised on 22nd October 1824 in Godstone, Surrey. He was the son of John Shirley & (Sarah Bysh) who was the son of William Shirley & Sarah Greenaway. John married Sarah. John & Sarah lived at Old Road, Godstone in 1861; at the Railway Cottages, Godstone in 1871 and at No 6 the Villas, London Road, Godstone in 1881. Sarah possibly died in about May 1894 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 66') and John possibly died in about May 1896 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 72').

John & Sarah had twelve children.

  1. Esther Shirley was born in about February 1850 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
  2. Henry William Shirley was born in about August 1851 in Godstone RD, Surrey and was baptised on 7th December 1851 in Godstone, Surrey. He married Mary Ann Snelling in about May 1879 in Godstone RD, Surrey. Henry & Mary were living at 3 Providence Cottages, Caterham in 1881 and at Block Cottages, Blindley Heath, Godstone in 1891. Mary Ann had previously married as in 1881 there were two step children living with them (John FC Snelling 4 (Caterham), Annie M Snelling 2 (Caterham)). Henry & Mary Ann had six children.
    1. Arthur James H Shirley was born in about November 1880 in Caterham, Surrey (Godstone RD).
    2. William Charles Shirley was born in about August 1882 in Caterham, Surrey (Godstone RD).
    3. Sydney Albert Shirley was born in about May 1884 in Caterham, Surrey (Godstone RD).
    4. Samuel George Shirley was born in about November 1885 in Caterham, Surrey (Godstone RD).
    5. Spencer Harold Shirley was born in about May 1888 in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD).
    6. Stanley Gordon Shirley was born in about February 1891 in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD) and he died in about February 1892 in Godstone RD, Surrey (aged 0).
  3. Anne Shirley (Ann) was born in about August 1853 in Godstone RD, Surrey but was probably baptised on 12th August 1855 in Godstone, Surrey.
  4. Arthur Shirley was born in about May 1855 in Godstone RD, Surrey and was baptised on 12th August 1855 in Godstone, Surrey.
  5. John Shirley was born in about February 1857 in Godstone RD, Surrey and was baptised on 10th May 1857 in Godstone, Surrey.
  6. Alice Shirley was born in about February 1859 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
  7. Mary Shirley was born in about May 1861 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
  8. Agnes Eliza Shirley was born in about August 1863 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
  9. William Shirley was born in about August 1865 in Godstone RD, Surrey and was baptised on 12th November 1865 in Godstone, Surrey.
  10. Louisa Shirley was born in about February 1868 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
  11. Sarah Jane Shirley was born in about January 1871 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
  12. Edward Charles Shirley was born in about August 1873 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
