Israel Rhodes Israel Rhodes & Phillis sayner were one of my 4^th generation ancestors.

Israel Rhodes was baptised on 28^th March 1813 in Rothwell, Yorkshire, the son of James Rhodes & Sarah Craggs. He married firstly Elizabeth in about 1837 and they had six children (1-6). He married secondly Phillis Sayner on 12^th May 1853 in Barwick in Elmer, Yorkshire (Source is certificate- Israel shown as age 40 & widower, son of James; Phillis shown as age 34 and daughter of Abrham) and they had five children. Israel died in about February 1886 (aged 72) in Hunslet, Yorkshire.

Phillis Sayner was born in about 1819 in Pontefract, Yorkshire, the daughter of Abraham Sayner & Alice. Abraham & Alice later (1841) lived in Hambleton, Yorkshire with other Sayner families. In 1861 census Abraham is shown as widower, age 76 from Brayton visiting Elias Sayner age 81 (presume brother) also from Brayton. In 1841 census shows Abraham 50, Alice 55 and Filis 20. Phillis died in about November 1896 (aged 78) in Hunslet, Yorkshire.

Israel & Phillis had eleven known children.

Henry Rhodes was born in 1859 in Oulton, Yorkshire.
Francis George Rhodes was born on 9^th June 1861 in Oulton, Yorkshire. He married Fanny Bland. Details of Francis Rhodes & Fanny Bland are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
Edward Rhodes was born in 1863 in Oulton, Yorkshire.

Israel Rhodes

Marriage at church in 'Barwick in Elmer'. Witnesses of marriage unclear. ? Sayner and ??. Israel was a Widower at time of his second marriage.

On the 1841, 1861 & 1881 census and on Francis George's birth certificate, Israel Rhodes occupation was Stone Merchant. On Francis George's marriage certificate both Israel and son Francis are shown as Farmers.

At the time of the 1841 census he and his family were living with his parents James & Sarah in Quarry Hill, Oulton. At the time of the 1861 census he and his family were living at 'Hollow Bank!', Dicksons Row, Rothwell and he was a Stone Merchant. His brother James & family and his brother William were also living there. At the time of the 1871 census he and his family were living at Hob Lane, Oulton. At the time of the 1881 census he and his family were living at Mount Pleasant, Oulton

James Rhodes

Occupation was Cowkeeper at time of 1901 Census. Year of birth shown as 1854 (age 46), whereas in 1881 census year of birth shown as 1855 (age 25). Lived at Mount Pleasant, Oulton.- same place as Father in 1881.
Original occupation shown as Stone Mason in 1881. Cow Keeper consistent with Israel and Francis becoming Farmers.
No children shown in 1901.
Father in law, James Kaye, aged 80 from Hippax! also lived with family at time of 1901 census

There were numerous differant spellings of "Rhodes" in the parish registers e.g Roades, Roads, Rodes, Roide, Roids, Roodes, Royde, Roydes, Rhods, Rhodes, Rhoods.
1881 Census shows birth year as 1813/14. Marriage certificate shows it as 1812/13. Birth date taken from IGI.
Census shows birth place as Oulton but IGI show it as parish of Rothwell. Woodlesford, Oulton and Rothwell are all very close to each other (2 miles) and all in the same parish.
For the period 1803 - 1821 (age at marriage of 16 to age 60 at birth of youngest child), there was one Israel Rhodes born in Rothwell, none were born in the adjacent parishes , one was born in the surrounding parishes ( Birstall), and two were born in more distant parishes. The one identified is very likely to be correct as the birth date is consistent with age given in 1841/61 census & marriage cerificate (date range 1811-1816: 5 year range on census age of 27) and the birth location is consistent with later census.

There appears to be two Abraham Sayner’s. One baptised 04/07/1786, son of Amos Sayner & Elizabeth Parker in Thornhill. Second baptised 06/03/1787, son of John Sayner and Dorothy in Brayton. The 1841 census shows a Abraham & Alice with daughter filis (Phillis) living in Hambleton which is close to Brayton. 1861 census shows a Abraham (widower) living with his brother Elias and both were from Brayton. However the age is shown as 76 implying a birth year of 1784/1785 . An Abraham Sayner married Alice Brook on 6/03/1810 in Kippax which is equi-distant from Thornhill and Brayton . Alice I think died in about February 1857 in the Selby area which is also near Brayton. Phillis went on to marry Israel Rhodes in Barwick in Elmer which is near to no-where, but Phillis on later census was born in Pontefract.
