John Payne was probably born in about 1514 in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). He was mentioned in his father Edward Payne's 'Will' of 1558 and he inherited Lodge House.
1. John Payne (Paine) was born in about 1540 in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). He lived at the "Lodge". He was a witness of John Payne of Liod's 'Will' of 1592. He was possibly buried on 15^th May 1595 in Ardingly, Sussex ('of the Lodge')

Leonard Payne was possibly born in about 1550 possibly in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found)- (NOTE: there is no indication who his parents were). He married Mary Drew on 28^th April 1570 in Ardingly, Sussex (Lenard & Marye). Leonard & Mary had five children.
1. Henry Payne was baptised on 3^rd May 1573 in Ardingly, Sussex ('son of Lenard'). He maybe possibly (but see also Henry Payne son of Thomas 1510) married Joan Broocker on 27^th February 1598 in Ardingly, Sussex. Joan was buried on 13^th February 1631 in Ardingly, Sussex (' Joane, wife of Henry Paine'). Henry left a 'Will' dated 7^th January 1633 and was buried on 19^th January 1633 in Ardingly, Sussex ('an old man'). Henry & Joan had possibly five children.
  1. Richard Payne was born in about 1600 in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1633 as executor. He had at least one child Henry who was mentioned in his grandfather Henry Paine's 'Will' of 1633.
  2. Joan Payne was born in about 1600 in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1633 as Joan, wife of Roger Botting. She had at least one child Eleanor who was mentioned in her grandfather Henry Paine's 'Will' of 1633 as .Eleanor Botting dau of Roger.

Richard married secondly Katherine Balcombe (a widow) on 7^th October 1566 in Balcombe, Sussex. Katherine was possily buried on 30^th March 1588 in Balcome, Sussex (unnamed -wife of Richard Paine of Bushe'). Richard & Katherine had possibly nine children.

Isabell Payne (Paine) was born in about 1550 in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). She married John Outred on 22^nd June 1572 in Ardingly, Sussex (as Isabelle). Isabell was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1573 but unnamed (but was elder sister of Elizabeth) but the 'Will' mentioned his son in law John Outred. Isabelle & John had at least one child (George) who was mentioned in his grandfather Thomas Payne's 'Will' of 1573.

He left a 'Will dated 30^th September 1559 and was probably buried on 12^th January 1560 in Lindfield, Sussex . He possibly had five children (but 'will' transcript is very unsure).

He later lived at 'Wickham' in Lindfield. His first wife (unnamed) was buried on 23^rd May 1573 in Lindfield, Sussex. His second wife (unnamed) was buried in February 1576 in Lindfield, Sussex. In 1576 John was involved in Arbitration award of 'Hapset' in Ardingly (see Archive item 6 and also Family Ref 4 above). John had seven children.

Nearly all the family seems to have died in August 1603, presumably from a plague. Richard was possibly buried on 13^th August 1603 in Lindfield, Sussex and his wife (unnamed) was buried there on 28^th August 1603. Richard had eight children.

Alexander Payne was born in about 1510 in possibly Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). He later lived in Balcombe. He married Eleanor (Ellynor).Alexander and Eleanor had five children. Alexander possibly left a 'Will' dated December 1558 that was proved in January 1559.

2. John Payne was baptised on 17^th May 1541 in Balcombe, Sussex ('son of Alexander').
3. Elizabeth Payne (Elsabeth) was born & baptised on 21^st April 1543 in Balcombe, Sussex (no parents shown).

Henry Payne was born in about 1510 in possibly Ardingly, (or maybe West Hoathly), Sussex (derived as no birth record found). He married Elizabeth (see Archives item 5). Henry died in about 1559. Henry & Elizabeth had at least one child
1. Henry Payne was born in about 1552 in possibly Ardingly, (or maybe West Hoathly), Sussex (derived as no birth record found, but Archive item 5 shows date of grant of land called Bussex to son on 21 Aug 1573- assumed when is is 21). Henry married Dorothy and had lands "Ludwells", "Busses" & "Butchers" in West Hoathly and "Parkgate" in Ditchling. Henry left a 'Will' dated 5^th September 1608 and he died on 10^th September 1608 in Ditchling. Henry & Dorothy had at least seven children (see Archives item 9-Inquisition no 3 & also Archives item 8).
  1. Henry Payne was maybe possibly baptised on 18^th April 1591 East Grinstead, Sussex (no parents shown ). He married Joan Hall. Details of Henry Payne & Joan Hall are shown separately.
    However this Henry may not be the correct one as Henry was possibly born in about 1589 (possible date is 27^th July 1589 as he was 19 years 1 month 14 days at his fathers death (see Archives item 9-Inquisition no 3).

In the 'Will' he mentions his sons John & Thomas (executor)& Others Roger Charcroft, George Willard, Richard Infield. The Will was witnessed by John Payne of .... and Thomas Comstock?
John Payne (family ref 3 B) left a 'Will' that was dated 19^thFebruary 1592 which was proved on 19^th May 1592 . The link is to a transcript of the 'Will'. In the 'Will' he mentions his wife Mary (Marie); his daughters Elizabeth, Marie, Anne (all under 21 years); Others Margaret Payne & Jobe Payne (servants) ; his Overseers Richard Payne of Stone & John Chatfield. The 'Will' was witnessed by Will’m Grant? ( Minister of Erdinglye), John Wheler, John Payne of Lodge & Thomas Payne.
Henry Payne (family ref 3 C i) left a 'Will' that was dated 7^th January 1633 which was proved on 10^th October 1633 . The link is to a transcript of the 'Will'. Richard Payne (family ref ) left a 'Will' that was dated 22^nd September 1606 which was proved on 15^th April 1606!! . He was of Hapset. The link is to a transcript of the 'Will'. In the 'Will' he mentions his daughter Anne ; his son Edward (executor); his granddaughter Elizabeth (dau of Edward); Others: Richard Balcombe & his daughter Joane Balcombe ; witnesses were Richard Ritson? and George Lindfielde.

Transcription of an indenture From Richard Payne of west Hoathly to Thomas Budgen of Nutfield for the land on which to build a mill.
The Indenture is worded as follows:-
This indenture made the eleventh day of October in the seventeenth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord Charles the Second by the grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King defender of the Faith Anno Domini 1665 Between Richard Paine of Westhoathley in the County of Sussex Lord of the Manor of Burstowe in the County of Surrey of the one part and Thomas Budgen of Nutfield in the County of Surrey Miller of the other part WITNESSETH that the said Richard Paine for divers good causes and considerations him thereunto . . . enabling. . . Hath demised granted and farme letten and by these presents doth demise grant and to farme lett unto the said Thomas Budgen that peece or parcell of land and a windmill thereupon newly erected and built by the said Thomas Budgen containing by estimation halfe an acre situate lying and being in the parish of Burstowe aforsaid neere the Lane there called Bletchingly lane and being part of the wastground belonging to the said Mannor of Burstowe to HAVE AND TO HOLD the said peece or parcell of land and Mill with the appurtenances unto the said Thomas Budgen his Executors Administrators andAssigns from the Feast of St Michaell the Archangell last past before the date hereof unto the full end and terme of Five hundred yeares from thence next ensueing and fully to be compleat and ended YIELDING AND PAYING therefore yearely and every yeare during the said terme unto the said Richard Paine his Executors and Assigns the yearely rent or sume of five shillings of lawful money of England at the two most usuall Feasts or termes in the yeare that is to say the Feasts of the Annunciation of the blessed Virgin Mary and of St Michaell the Archangell by equall portions.

2. THOMAS PAYNE of Horsted Keynes, yeo. Vol. 355, No. 19. E. G., 26 July 14 James. Died 13 May last.
  Heir, son Thomas, aged 6 years 9 months, not more. Lands. " Crouche house alias Crouchers" in Horsted Keynes. Eleanor his widow survives at Horsted Keynes.
3. HENRY PAYNE, yeo., of West Hothly. Vol. 311, No. 108. E. G., 1 June 7 James. Died 10 Sept. 1608 at Ditchling.
  Heir, son Henry, aged 19 years 1 month 14 days. Lands." Ludwells," "Busses" and "Butchers" in W. Hothly, cottage in Ditchling. Made will 5 Sept. 6 James to wife Dorothy "Ludwells" for life, paying son Henry 3 a year at 21 other property and lands called" Parkgate" in Ditchling to be sold for
  benefit of 5 younger sons and daughter Elizabeth.
