John Mead & Elizabeth Dobson were one of my 5th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

John Mead was maybe possibly born on 9th January 1801 in Whitby, Yorkshire, the son of Roger Mead & Mary Graham, and was baptised there on 12th January. (but see concerns below). He married Elizabeth Dobson on 23rd February 1825 in Sunderland, Durham (Source is IGI & unconfirmed). He was a seaman by occupation.

Elizabeth Dobson was baptised on 6th November 1798 in Sunderland, Durham. She was the daughter of Charlton Dobson & Frances Horsley.

  1. Mary Mead (shown as Maria) was born on 17th October 1827 in Monk-Wearmouth, Sunderland, Durham and was baptised there on 30th January 1828. (Source is IGI & unconfirmed). She died in 1828.(Source is IGI & unconfirmed).
  2. Mary Mead was born on 10th March 1829 in Monk-Wearmouth, Sunderland, Durham and was baptised there on 29th March 1829. She married James Speight.  Details of Mary Mead & James Speight are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. There are no Mead's or Medd's shown in the IGI records in Sunderland 1719-1829 or Middlesborough 1735-1834. There was a couple of births in early 1800's in South Shields. In the rest of Durham only the occasional individual birth has been found in some towns for this period. This implies that John Mead was born elsewhere and moved to Sunderland in the 1820's.
  2. There are a number of Mead's & Medd's in Yorkshire, particularly in Whitby (but also some in Sinnington & Pickering). Possible parents are Rodger and Mary Mead from Whitby in Yorkshire. However there was a marriage by a John Mead in Whitby in 1826 which may invalidate the proposed link.
  3. For father Roger, Mead is also shown as Medd.
