John Feldwick & Anne Payne were one of my 10th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

John Feldwick was baptised on 1st June 1611 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was the son of John Feldwick & Frances Watson. (assumed as no parents shown). He married Anne Payne on 14th May 1644 in Lewes, Sussex (there is also a record of them being married on 9th May in Lewes St John sub Castro).  He was overseer to his cousin Thomas Comber (see Thomas Comber 1570 family ref 1). John left a 'Will' dated 10th April 1662 and was buried on 16th April 1662 in West Hoathly, Sussex.

Anne Payne was probably baptised on 23rd May 1624 and was the daughter of Thomas Payne & Elizabeth Dungate of Stonelands in West Hoathly,Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1628 as under 21 and unmarried. She was executor to her husband's 'Will' in 1662. Anne left a 'Will' dated 25th November 1669 and was buried on 24th August 1670 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('widow').

  1. John Feldwick was baptised on 13th April 1645 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1662, as executor and as under 21, in his mother's 'Will' of 1669, in his sister Anne's 'Will' of 1675 and in his great aunt Ann Dungate's 'Will' of 1680. He was executor to his uncle John Payne's 'Will' of 1673 (shown as kinsman). He firstly married Anne and had one child (A). Anne was mentioned in her mother in law Anne Feldwick's 'Will' of 1669. Anne was buried on 8th April 1674 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('wife of John'). He secondly married Anne Collocke on 28th September 1674 in Worth Sussex (John shown as widower, aged 30, Anne aged 20 from Ifield - license issued by VGA (Vicar general allegations marriage license)- (also record in parish register for 22nd July which is confusing).
    Anne married secondly Richard Pratt on 11th May 1686 at Lewes Sussex ( License issued at Lewes on 8th May - Anne a widow and both from West Hoathly ) - see Archive below. Richard Pratt was mentioned in Anne Feldwick's 'Will' of 1712 as Father in law and executor (see ref 1 C). Anne & Richard Pratt had three children Elizabeth, Thomas & Sarah Pratt all mentioned in Anne Feldwick's 'Will' of 1712.
    John Feldwick owned properties called "Fieldweeke" and "Homewoods". He left a 'Will' dated 14th June 1682 and he was buried on 9th September 1682 in West Hoathly, Sussex. John & Anne had four children (B-E).
    1. William Feldwick was baptised on 21st July 1671 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1682, in his aunt Anne Feldwick's 'Will' of 1675 (as under 21 and only son of brother John) and in his great aunt Anne Dungate's 'Will' of 1680 (as under 21). He maybe possibly married Anne Wheeler (or Weller) on 6th October 1691 either in Ardingly or Lewes (License issued in Lewes on 6th October). William was probably buried on 26th October 1696 in West Hoathly, Sussex (a yeoman) and Anne married secondly Abraham Stoner on 2nd November 1697 in Horne, Surrey ( License issued at Lewes on 1st November - Anne a widow and both from West Hoathly ) - see Archive below. (Abraham was probably buried 6th Nov 1716 in West Hoathly ('died of ye smallpox'). William & Anne had three children.
      1. Anne Feldwick was baptised on 23rd July 1692 in West Hoathly, Sussex and was buried there on 8th April 1695.
      2. John Feldwick was baptised on 31st May 1694 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
      3. William Feldwick was baptised on 21st August 1696 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He maybe possibly married Jane and had eight children in Croydon (Ann Fellwick 1720, Mary, William, John, Thomas, Wheeler, Elizabeth, Sarah - fourth son maybe named after mother!).
    2. Elizabeth Feldwick was baptised on 2nd December 1676 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Elizabeth was maybe possibly buried on 30th March 1681 in West Hoathly, Sussex (her mother named a subsequent daughter of her second marriage Elizabeth).
    3. Anne Feldwick was baptised on 2nd May 1678 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1682. Anne left a 'Will' dated 3rd March 1712.
    4. Jane Feldwick was baptised on 19th September 1679 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1682. She married Henry Burley on 15th February 1702 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her sister Anne's 'Will' of 1712 as Jane Burley, wife of Henry with four children (Charles, John, Henry and Anne).
    5. John Feldwick was baptised on 9th September 1682 in West Hoathly, Sussex. John maybe possibly married Sarah Everest on 8th January 1701 at Chiddingstone in Kent (Sarah from Penshurst) (but see concerns- item 4). John was mentioned in his sister Anne Feldwick's 'Will' of 1712 as deceased. John was buried on 11th January 1708 in Sevenoaks, Kent. Sarah Feldwick married secondly John Gisling on 13th September 1709 in Sevenoaks, Kent. John & Sarah had three children
      1. William Feldwick was baptised on 30th October 1702 in Sevenoaks, Kent and was buried there on 3rd November 1702.
      2. Anne Feldwick was baptised on 6th April 1704 in Chevening, Kent ('dau of John Fellwick')
      3. John Feldwick was born on 2nd June and was baptised on 7th July 1706 in Sevenoaks, Kent. He maybe married three times. He married his third wife Mary Slaughter on 4th October 1736 in Sevenoaks, Kent. Mary died on 24th June and was buried on 30th June 1773 in Sevenoaks, Kent ('aged 72'). John left a 'Will' dated 15th November 1773 and he died on 25th November and was buried on 28th November 1773 in Sevenoaks, Kent ('aged 67'). John & Mary had three children.
        1. Mary Feldwick was baptised on 25th November 1737 in Sevenoaks, Kent
        2. John Feldwick was born on 25th February and was baptised on 4th March 1739 in Sevenoaks, Kent. He married Sarah Wells in Hollanden, Leigh, Kent. He was mentioned in his father John Feldwick's 'Will' of 1773. John left a 'Will' dated 24th August 1791 and he died on 21st September and was buried on 26th September 1791 in Sevenoaks, Kent ('aged 52'). Sarah was buried on 1st April 1820 in Sevenoaks, Kent (' aged 76'). John & Sarah had eight children.
        3. William Feldwick. He was mentioned in his father John Feldwick's 'Will' of 1773.
  2. Anne Feldwick (Annis) was baptised on 19th July 1646 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1662 as under 21 and in her mother's 'Will' of 1669. Anne left a 'Will' dated 15th June 1675 (shown as a Spinster of West Hoathly) and was buried on 30th July 1675 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
  3. William Feldwick was baptised on 16th April 1648 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1662 as under 21, in his mother's 'Will' of 1669 and in his sister Anne's 'Will' of 1675 (as executor). He probably married Audrey Gibb (or Adrienne). Details of William Feldwick & Audrey Gibb are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  4. Mary Feldwick was born about 1650 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1662 as under 21, in her mother's 'Will' of 1669 and in her sister Anne's 'Will' of 1675 (as sister and as wife of Thomas Bankes). She married Thomas Bankes on 3rd March 1674 in Ardingly, Sussex (license issue at Lewes on 30th January, and Mary shown as of West Hoathly & Thomas of Ardingly).
  5. Elizabeth Feldwick was born about 1653 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1662 as under 21 and in her mother's 'Will' of 1669 and in her sister Anne's 'Will' of 1675 (as sister and as wife of John Beard). She married John Board on 3rd June 1675 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
  6. Thomas Feldwick was baptised on 15th September 1655 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1662 as under 21, in his mother's 'Will' of 1669 and in his sister Anne's 'Will' of 1675 (as under 21). He maybe possibly married Jane (or Joan) Marchant on 5th July 1679 in Worth, Sussex (License issued at Lewes and Thomas Feldwicke shown as of Worth). Thomas left a 'Will' dated 6th July 1682 and was buried on 1st August 1682 in West Hoathly, Sussex (Thomas of Worth). (or possibly 8th August in Worth). Jane was mentioned in her husbands 'Will' of 1682 and she was probably buried on 19th December 1700 in Worth, Sussex (shown as Jane Velvick). Thomas & Joan had two children.
    1. Jane Feldwick was born in about 1680, probably in Worth, Sussex (derived as no birth records yet found). She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1682.
    2. Sarah Feldwick was baptised on 29th January 1682 in Worth, Sussex ('daughter of Thomas Felfeck') and she was buried there on 16th April 1682 ('daughter of Thomas Velvick').
  7. Sarah Feldwick was baptised on 6th January 1658 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1662 as under 21 and in her mother's 'Will' of 1669 and in her sister Anne's 'Will' of 1675 (as under 21). She probably married John Bryan on 23rd January 1679 in East Grinstead, Sussex (Sarah shown as Velvick). License issued at Lewes on 23rd January 1679 and Sarah shown of West Hoathly.

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. There were numerous differant spellings of "Feldwick" in the parish registers eg Feldwick, Fieldwick, Feldewick, Feldweeke, Feldwicke, Velvick, Vilfick, Velveck.
  2. For the period 1598 - 1628 (age at marriage of 16 to age 60 at birth of youngest child), there was one John Feldwick born in West Hoathly, one was born in the adjacent parishes and none born in the surrounding parishes. It is probable that the identified William is the correct one.
    1. 01/06/1611 in West Hoathly probable son of John but parents not shown
    2. 21/01/1599 in East Grinstead possible son of Thomas but parents not shown.
  3. All the children were shown born to John & Anne. In the period 1615-1645, (earliest age at marriage of 16 to year of birth of first child), only two marriages of a John has been identified so the one to Anne Payne is very likely to be correct. The other marriage was in 1617 to Prudence Taylor who married John's father and she was buried 'wife of John senior '.
  4. For family ref 1 E there is nothing positively linking the Feldwick's in Sevenoaks, Kent to those of West Hoathly, Sussex but there are also no Feldwick families in this Kent area at this time. This link was identified originally by William Edmond Feldwick, a very early genealogist in 1887 who was descended from John Feldwick & Sarah Wells (family ref 1 E iii b). He was the illegitimate son of Sophia Feldwick (1781 - 1853). There is also the issue of which John in Sussex he was descended from - the one identified or John 1676 son of William of Balcombe.

In the 'Will' he mentions his wife Anne (executor); his son John (executor); his other six children Anne, William, Mary, Elizabeth, Thomas & Sarah (all under 21); his brother John Payne (overseer); his cousin Thomas Comber (overseer); Others mentioned were Robert Browne,William Ilman and Michael Brooker (all servants). Witnesses were Henry Faulconer, George Payne, John Payne
  2. Anne Feldwick (family ref top) left a 'Will' dated 25th November 1669 and was proved on 23rd October 1670 (Lewes A32.P89). The link is to a transcript of the 'Will'. In the 'Will' she mentions her sons John (athon), William (executor), Thomas; her daughters Anne (executor), Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah; her sister Katherine; her brother John Payne (overseer & witness); her daughter in law Anne Feldwicke wife of son John; and her Cousin Thomas Comber of Philpotte (overseer & witness).
  3. John Feldwick (family ref 1) left a 'Will' dated 14th June 1682 and was proved in 1682 (Lewes A36.P153). The link is to a transcript of the 'Will'. In the 'Will' he mentions his wife Anne; his son William (under 21); his daughters Ann, Jane & unborn child; his brother William. Others mentioned were Nicholas Mills and Abraham Nicholas (overseers); Witnesses were Jane Colegate, Mary Weeler, Nath Moore. Properties mentioned were Fieldweeke and Homewoods
  4. Anne Feldwick (family ref 1 C) left a 'Will' dated 3rd March 1712 and was proved in 1712 (Lewes A48.P187). The link is to a readable copy of the 'Will'. The 'Will' says she was a Spinster of Crawley and she mentions her father John of West Hoathly (deceased); her father in law Richard Pratt of Crawley (executor); her sisters Jane Burley (wife of Henry), Elizabeth Pratt & Sarah Pratt ; her brothers John Feldwick (deceased), Thomas Pratt ; her cousins Charles, John, Henry, Anne Burley (children of sister Jane - all under 21); Nephew: unnamed (under 21) - son of brother John; Witnesses were James Dinnis, James Jordan, Elizabeth Dinis.Brothers.
  5. John Feldwick (family ref 1 E iii) left a 'Will' dated 10th November 1773 and was proved on 13th December 1773 (Lambeth VH96/4140). The link is to a transcript of the 'Will'. In the 'Will' he mentions his sons William, John (executor). Witnesses were John Hayes, F.Horton.
  6. Anne Feldwick (family ref 2) Spinster left a 'Will' dated 15th June 1675 and was proved in 1675 (Lewes A34.P122). The link is to a transcript of the 'Will'. In the 'Will' she mentions her brothers John , William (executor), Thomas (under 21) ; her sisters Mary (wife of Thomas Bankes), Elizabeth (wife of John Beard), Sara (under 21) ; her nephew William (son of brother John- under 21); her godsons John Homewood (son of John Homewood of WH) & John Gibb (son of Francis Gibb of Worth); Other John Mills (of Worth) - executor; Witnesses Nicholas Mills & Thomas Moore.
  7. Thomas Feldwick (family ref 6) left a 'Will' dated 16th July 1682 and was proved in 1682 (ref Lewes A36.P41). The link is to a copy of the 'Will'. In the 'Will' he mentions his wife Jane and his daughter Jane. Thomas was a Wheelwright.
