Stephen Dungate & Ann Cripps were one of my 11th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

Stephen Dungate (Dungat) was baptised on 13th December 1590 in East Grinstead, Sussex. His parents were not shown but it is very likely that he was the son of Stephen Dungate & Joan Humpfrey. Stephen married Ann Cripps (Cripse) on 14th July 1611 in East Grinstead, Sussex (License issued at Lewes on 13th July with sureties by John Cripps of East Grinstead). Stephen left a 'Will' dated 5th August 1652 and he died shortly afterwards. He owned 5 acres of land called 'Woods Riddens' in East Grinstead.

Ann Cripps birth details are unknown. She was mentioned in her husband's will of 1652.

  1. John Dungate was baptised on 9th July 1612 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's will of 1652 and his sister Sarah's will of 1666. He married Jane Constable on 1st November 1642 at Lewes (license issued at Lewes, John & Jane from East Grinstead with sureties, by Richard Constable of East Grinstead). John & Jane had one child (A). John possibly married secondly Joan and they had three children (B-D). Joan left a Will dated 10th June 1693 (a widow).
    1. John Dungate was baptised on 20th November 1643 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his aunt Sarah's will of 1667.
    2. Stephen Dungate was baptised on 26th December 1647 in East Grinstead, Sussex (mother shown as Joan). He was mentioned in his aunt Sarah's will of 1667.
    3. Elizabeth Dungate was baptised on 17th October 1650 in East Grinstead, Sussex (mother shown as Joan).
    4. Sarah Dungate was baptised on 7th June 1655 in East Grinstead, Sussex (mother shown as Joan) and she was buried there on 15th June 1659 ('daughter of John Dungate, a child')
  2. Ann Dungate (Dungatte) was baptised on 28th December 1613 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's will of 1652. She married Edward Nicholls (Nycoll or Nichols) on 2nd March 1653 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. Ann & Edward were mentioned in her sister Sarah's will of 1667. They had a child
    1. Edward Nycoll. He was mentioned in his aunt Sarah's will of 1667
  3. Stephen Dungate was baptised on 4th February 1616 in East Grinstead, Sussex. (mother shown as Agnes instead of Anne). He was mentioned in his father's will of 1652 and his sister Sarah's will of 1667. He married Mercy Pepper on 19th June 1649 in East Grinstead, Sussex. They had a child.
    1. Elizabeth Dungate was born in about 1651 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her aunt Sarah's will of 1667.
  4. Sarah Dungate (Dungat) was baptised on 20th July 1617 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's will of 1652. She never married and left a 'Will' dated 17th January 1667 and was buried in January 1667 in East Grinstead, Sussex (day not known).
  5. Thomas Dungate (Dungat) was baptised on 9th January 1620 in East Grinstead, Sussex and presumably died prior to 1652.
  6. Elizabeth Dungate (Elsabeth Dungat) was baptised on 13th May 1621 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's will of 1652. She married Henry Faulconer. Details of Henry Faulconer & Elizabeth Dungate are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  7. Eleanor Dungate (Elenor Dungat) was baptised on 9th November 1623 in East Grinstead, Sussex and she was buried there on 9th February 1627.
  8. Joseph Dungate (Dungat) was baptised on 13th April 1628 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's will of 1652 and his sister Sarah's will of 1666. He married Sarah Heasman. Details of Joseph Dungate & Sarah Heasman are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.

  1. Stephen Dungate left a 'Will' that was dated 05/08/1652 and was proved on 26/08/1652 (Ref PCC Prob 11/224). He mentions his wife Ann; his sons John, Stephen and Joseph (executor) and daughters Ann, Sara and Elizabeth. Also mentioned is Overseers Henry Faulconer and Edward Lucas.   2. Sarah Dungate left a 'Will' that was dated 17/01/1667. She mentions her brothers a) John & children John & Stephen, b) Stephen & eldest daughter Elizabeth + others, c) Joseph & five children; her sister Anne + husband Edward Nycoll & child Edward; her brother in law Henry Faulconer and children Henry & Sarah .
