John Daniel were one of my 13^th generation ancestors.

It is a bit unclear where the very early Daniel families came from. There are two main concentrations in Sussex- a) around Horsham, Nuthurst & Shipley areas and b) around Framfield & Waldron areas. There was also a later concentraion around Cowden in Kent. There is evidence of movements between the areas. John moved from Horsham to Cowden, Kent where he died in 1631 (leaving his son Walter (see Will) still living in Nuthurst, Sussex; Brian was born in Shipley, Sussex in 1597 but had children in Worth & Frant. Most families in Horsham & Shipley moved eastwards (to Slaugham, Cuckfield & beyond) with few remaining after 1700 and the other block of Framfield spread to adjacent parishes.

The main ancestral line moved to Lingfield, Surrey (about halfway between the two, but adjacent to Cowden) and then gradually to the adjacent parishes of Horne & Godstone in Surrey. The main linking factor of all the families is the name Edward which usually appears as the name of either the first or second son. It is very clear in Thomas 1722 & Thomas 1760 where it is above the son Thomas named after father indicating that Edward was a grandfather of Thomas 1760 or was an important ancestral figure.

The group based around Waldron does not have any Edwards and are therefore probably not direct ancestors. See Thomas Daniel 1500

John Daniel was born in about 1540. He possibly married secondly Margery Weste on 27^th July 1573 in West Grinstead, Sussex.

He married Mary Nye on 13^th October 1593 in Chichester, Sussex ( Mary from Nuthurst) (licence issued at Pagham & Tarring Peculiar on 13^th October). Mary was buried on 19^th Sepember 1610 in Horsham, Sussex ('wife of John, of the plague'). John possibly married secondly Ann Cowper in May 1611 in Shipley, Sussex. (Ann was a widow). John & Mary had six children and John & Ann had three children

2. Mary Daniel (Daniell) was baptised on 4^th December 1597 in Horsham, Sussex (dau of John & Mary).
3. John Daniel (Danyell) was baptised on 24^th August 1600 in Horsham, Sussex (son of John & Mary) and he was buried there on 24th September 1610 ('child of John')
4. Walter Daniel (Daniell) was baptised on 15^th May 1603 in Horsham, Sussex (son of John & Marie). He married Mary Botting on 19^th February 1628 in Nuthurst, Sussex. Walter & Mary had four children.

8. Margery Daniel (Margerie Daniell) was baptised on 9^th March 1617 in Shipley, Sussex (dau of John).

Agnes Daniel (Daniell) was baptised on 21^st December 1571 in Nuthurst, Sussex (no parents shown). She probably married John Wilkins on 7^th December 1607 in Nuthurst, Sussex.

William Daniel was born in about 1580 (derived as no birth records found). He married firstly Mary Linfield on 24^th January 1600 in Shipley, Sussex (shown as Lenfeeld & Danyell). Mary was possibly buried on 13^th August 1610 in Shipley, Sussex ('Margaret, wife of William'). William probably married secondly Emily in August 1611 in Shipley, Sussex (shown as Daniell). He probably married thirdly Joan Linfield in 1620 (21st of a month, shown as Linfeild) in Nuthurst, Sussex and she was buried on 20^th February 1621 in Nuthurst, Sussex ('unnamed, wife of William'). He possibly married fourthly Sarah Parson in July 1621 in Shipley, Sussex (Sarah was a widow & william shown as Daniell). William was probably buried on 8^th December 1639 in Nuthurst, Sussex..

Andrew Daniel was born in about 1590 (derived as no birth records found- may not the son of John). He married Agnes Tribe in October 1616 in Shipley, Sussex. Agnes was buried on 8^th December 1623 in Shipley, Sussex ('wife of Andrew'). Andrew married secondly Silvestra Greinfield in November 1624 in Shipley, Sussex.
