Henry Colegate & Frances Castledean were one of my 9th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

Henry Colegate (Coulgatt) was baptised on 17th February 1650 in Rotherfield, Sussex. He was the son of Richard Colegate. He possibly married Frances Castledean on 15th May 1673 in East Grinstead, Sussex (shown as Coalegate). Henry left a 'Will' dated 8th March 1712 and was buried on 14th March 1713 in East Grinstead, Sussex.

Frances Castledean's birth details are not known. Frances was mentioned in her husband's 'Will' of 1712 and she was buried on 8th January 1715 in East Grinstead, Sussex ('widow').

  1. Elizabeth Colegate (Coalegate) was baptised on 3rd March 1674 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1712 as the wife of Ralf Borer.
  2. Richard Colegate was baptised on 29th February 1676 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was possibly buried on 5th November 1687 in East Grinstead, Sussex ('a young man').
  3. Mary Colegate was baptised on 5th January 1678 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1712. as the wife of John Knight of Lingfield.
  4. Sarah Colegate was baptised on 13th March 1681 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1712.
  5. John Colegate was baptised on 14th October 1683 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1712. He possibly married Mary Sellen. Details of John Colegate & Mary Sellen are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  6. Frances Colegate (Colgatte) was baptised on 18th December 1686 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1712 as the wife of John Phousf!!! of Lingfield.
  7. Robert Colegate was baptised on 25th March 1690 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1712. These children may belong to another Robert or Robert may have married firstly Elizabeth and secondly Mary
    1. Elizabeth Colegate was baptised on 12th May 1717 in East Grinstead, Sussex (daughter of Robert & Elizabeth).
    2. Anne Colegate was baptised on 30th August 1719 in East Grinstead, Sussex (daughter of Robert & Mary).
    3. Elizabeth Colegate was baptised on 15th July 1722 in East Grinstead, Sussex (parents shown as Richard & Mary but assume error).
  8. Henry Colegate was baptised on 10th November 1694 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1712. He married Mary. Mary was buried on 26th March 1749 in East Grinstead, Sussex ('wife of Henry'). Henry left a 'Will' that was dated 9th November 1765 and he was buried on 17th November 1765 in East Grinstead, Sussex. In his 'Will' Henry was shown as a Sawyer with land in the Manor of Duddleswell. Henry & Mary had three children.
    1. Frances Colegate was baptised on 7th May 1724 in East Grinstead, Sussex and she was probably buried there on 23rd August 1726 ('a child')
    2. Annalina Colegate was baptised on 23rd July 1727 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She married Thomas Blackstone on 30th December 1750 in Isfield, Sussex (Thomas of East Grinstead and Anne shown as Annarina). She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1765 as Ann Jane Blackstone wife of Thomas. Ann had two children, Thomas & Henry Blackstone, who were mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1765.
    3. Elizabeth Colegate was born in about 1730, probably in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1765 as Elizabeth Blackstone wife of William.

  1. There are a number of name variations in the parish records (Colegate, Colgate, Coldgate, Coulgate, Colgat, Colgatt, Colegat, Colgatte, Coalegate, Coalgate, Cowlgate, Colgath, Couldgatt, Coulgatt, Colgutt).
  2. For the period 1634 - 1657 (age at marriage of 16 to age 60 at birth of youngest child), there were no Henry Colegate's born in East Grinstead, Sussex, none were born in the adjacent parishes , three others were born in the surrounding parishes and none were born in more distant parishes. It is probable that the identified Henry is the correct one.
    1. 17/02/1650 in Rotherfield, Sussex son of Richard
    2. 23/04/1643 in Uckfield, Sussex son of Henry & Jane. He probably married Elizabeth Benbrooke on 30th March 1676 in Ringmer, Sussex (License issued in South Mailing on 27th March with Robert Colegate of Lewes (a goldsmith) providing suriety, and Henry Colgat shown as of Uckfield).

Wills:

  1. Henry Colegate (family ref top) left a 'Will' dated 8th March 1712 that was proved in 1713 (Ref Lewes A48.P306). He mentions his wife Frances; his sons Robert, John & Henry; his daughters Sarah, Frances (wife of John Phousf!!! of Lingfield), Elizabeth (wife of Ralph Borer!), Mary (wife of John Knight of Lingfield); Overseer William Lindley.
  2. Henry Colegate (family ref 8) left a 'Will' that was dated 9th November 1765 and proved in 1766 (Ref Lewes A61.P300). In the 'Will' he mentions his daughters Ann Jane Blackstone wife of Thomas, Elizabeth Blackstone wife of William; his grandchildren: Thomas & Henry Blackstone (children of Ann). Also mentioned were land in the Manor of Duddleswell and Henry was a Sawyer.
