Colegate's it is thought possibly originated in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (about 10km north of Sevenoaks area) &/or in Eynsford, Kent (Eynsford is about 5km east of Chelsfield). They then moved south to Tonbridge and then to Uckfield & Rotherfield in Sussex. Later generations returned to the Sevenoaks areas.

There are also Colegates in Davington in Faversham, Kent (near Canterbury) and in Cobham & Meopham near Rochester, Kent. These two groups are some distance from the family groups of my ancestry and have been excluded from the details held.

The details shown are some facts and some guesswork with lots of gaps. Hopefully over time this situation will be improved. The details are shown as a single Family Group but it is highly likely that it is two or more Family Groups. Whlist the Sussex records have mostly been cross checked and can be assumed to be valid, the Kent records have mostly been unverified at this point in time and therefore errors may arise.

NOTE: This structure is still evolving and should be taken as indicative only. I Need to get details of all relevant Kent births/marriages/deaths. If anyone has additional information on Kent Colegates then I would be grateful for copies. Once the links are known the structure will be simplified

  1. Ano Colegate birth details are not known, but she was possibly born in about 1535 in maybe possibly Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (derived as no birth records found). She married Thomas Head on 18th June 1559 in Tonbridge, Kent.
  2. Thomas Colegate (Colgat) birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1540 in maybe possibly Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (derived as no birth records found). He married Margaret Rumming on 18th October 1563 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (shown as Colgate). Thomas & Margaret had maybe three children.
    1. William Colegate (Colgate) was baptised on 4th November 1566 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (no parents shown). He possibly married secondly Margery on 9th July 1615 in Rotherfield, Sussex (wife's name not shown). Margery was buried on 25th November 1620 in Rotherfield, Sussex ('wife of William Coulgate'). Willam was buried on 31st March 1623 in Rotherfield, Sussex, (shown as Coulgate). William had possibly two children. (NOTE: one of these is obviously wrong- source is Records index but neither appear in transcript)
      1. John Colegate was baptised on 2nd November 1606 in Frant, Sussex.
      2. John Colegate was baptised on 20th July 1607 in Frant, Sussex.
    2. Amy Colegate (Colgat) was baptised on 11th December 1568 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent.(no parents shown)
    3. John Colegate (Jo Colgat) was baptised on 24th February 1572 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (son of Thomas & Margaret). He possibly married firstly Dorothy Marchall on 6th February 1597 in Shoreham, Kent) (Shoreham is about 5km south east of Chelsfield) He possibly married secondly Susan Heath (or Susanna) on 20th June 1603 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (shown as Colgate). John & Susan had three children.
      1. John Colegate (Colgat) was baptised on 4th March 1604 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent. John married Jane Pearch on 16th June 1631 in Shoreham, Kent. John & Jane (or Joan) had one child (a). John possibly married secondly Joan Buste on 9th July 1637 in Lullingstone, Kent. (Lullingstone is about 1km south west of Eynsford & 4km east of Chelsfield). John & Joan had four children (b-e).
        1. John Colegate (Johannes Colgat) was baptised on 2nd July 1632 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (son of John).
        2. Robert Colegate (Robertus Colgat) was baptised on 8th April 1638 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (son of Johannis & Johannae).
        3. Elizabeth Colegate (Colgat) was baptised on 12th April 1640 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (daughter of John). She possibly had a child, baseborn
          1. Elizabeth Colegate (Colgate) was baptised on 4th April 1669 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent
        4. Edward Colegate (Edvardus Colgat) was baptised on 17th December 1643 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (son of Johannis & Johannae).
        5. Mary Colegate (Maria) was baptised on 25th January 1646 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (daughter of Johannis & Johannae).
      2. Henry Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1600 in maybe possibly Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (derived as no birth records found). He married Joan Ridley on 9th February 1633 in Shoreham, Kent. Henry & Joan had two children.
        1. John Colegate (Johannes Colgat) was baptised on 22nd March 1635 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent.
        2. Joan Colegate (Johanna Colgat) was baptised on 14th July 1639 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent.
      3. Susanna Colegate (Colgat) was baptised on 12th April 1607 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent.
      4. Frances Colegate (Colgat) was baptised on 26th March 1609 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent.
    4. Edward Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1575 in maybe possibly Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (derived as no birth records found ). He married Mary Louckhurst on 7th August 1614 in Sevenoaks, Kent. Edward & Mary had at least two children.
      1. Margaret Colegate was baptised on 4th November 1621 in Chevening, Kent (daughter of Edward).
      2. Anne Colegate was baptised on 1st August 1624 in Chevening, Kent (daughter of Edward).
  3. Alice Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1542 in maybe possibly Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (derived as no birth records found). She married William Tattye on 20th January 1565 in Tonbridge, Kent.
  4. Arthur Colegate (Colgat) birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1540 in maybe possibly Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (derived as no birth records found). He married Joan Barnard (Joane) on 25th April 1566 in Knockholt, Kent (shown as Arthure Coalgate) -(Knockholt is about 5km south of Chelsfield). Arthur & Joan probably had one child. Arthur married secondly Alice Nott (Alse) on 15th January 1578 in Eynsford, Kent (shown as Coulgat) -. Arthur & Alse had two children.
    1. Ralph Colegate (Colgate) was baptised on 8th June 1572 in Halstead, Kent (son of Arthur). (Halstead is about 3km south of Chelsfield).
    2. Joan Colegate (Joane Colgate)was baptised on 7th June 1578 in Halstead, Kent (dau of Arthur).
    3. Anne Colegate (Colgate) was baptised on 10th January 1580 in Halstead, Kent (dau of Arthur).
  5. Catherine Colegate (Catherina Colgat) was baptised on 19th September 1549 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (no parents shown).
  6. Eleanor Colegate (Elinor Colgat) was baptised on 10th August 1552 in Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (no parents shown).
  7. Henry Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1540 in maybe possibly Chelsfield, Orpington, Kent (derived as no birth records found) . He married Joan Britt on 1st November 1568 in Westerham, Kent (Henry was a tailor and Joane daughter of Thomas).
  8. Robert Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1550 in maybe possibly Eynsford, Kent (derived as no birth records found). He married firstly Margerie Short on 3rd May 1574 in Eynsford, Kent (shown as Colgate). He possibly married secondly Alice Harrise (Alse) on 26th September 1586 in Eynsford, Kent (shown as Colgate).
    1. Robert Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1575 in maybe possibly Eynsford, Kent (derived as no birth records found). He married Thomasin. Robert & Thomasin had one child. He possibly secondly married Joan Eaton on 13th November 1623 in St Mary's Cray, Kent (St Mary's Cray is about 3km north of Chelsfield).
      1. Arnold Colegate was baptised on 7th November 1619 in Shoreham, Kent (son of Robert & Thomasin). Arnold had a child
        1. Dorothy Colegate (Colgate) was baptised on 11th June 1648 in Halstead, Kent ('daughter of Arnold').
    2. Michael Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1575 in maybe possibly Eynsford, Kent (derived as no birth records found). He married Joan Soas in December 1605 in East Grinstead, Sussex (shown as Mychell Coulgate). Michael & Joan had one known child. Michael was buried on 25th August 1638 in Uckfield, Sussex (shown as Colgate) and Joan was probably buried on 20th June 1639 in Uckfield, Sussex ('widow' -shown as Colgate).
      1. Margaret Colegate was baptised on 16th September 1610 in Uckfield, Sussex (dau of Michael).
    3. Mark Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1575 in maybe possibly Eynsford, Kent (derived as no birth records found). He married firstly person unknown and had possibly four children. Details of Mark Colegate are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
    4. Richard Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1580 in maybe possibly Eynsford, Kent (derived as no birth records found). He married Lettice Latter on 4th September 1609 in Speldhurst, Kent. Lettice was buried on 4th March 1654 in Rotherfield, Sussex ('widow'). Richard & Lettice had a child.
      1. John Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1625 in maybe possibly Rotherfield, Sussex, Kent (derived as no birth records found). He married and had maybe two children (NOTE: No basis for this- just set up to link to later records).
        1. Thomas Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1658 in maybe possibly Rotherfield, Sussex (derived as no birth records found). He married Jane Chary. Details of Thomas Colegate & Jane Chary are shown separately.
        2. Reuben Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1660 in maybe possibly Hadlow, Kent (derived as no birth records found). Details of Reuben Colegate are shown separately
  9. Nicholas Colegate birth details are not known, but he was possibly born in about 1550 in maybe possibly Eynsford, Kent (derived as no birth records found). He married and had a child. He married secondly Joan Maynerde on 9th October 1587 in Foots Croay, Kent (shown as Nycolas Colgatt & Jonne).
    1. John Colegate (Colgat) was baptised on 25th September 1577 in Eynsford, Kent.
