John Carpenter & Frances Monke were one of my 10th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

John Carpenter was baptised on 6th March 1636 in Lingfield, Surrey, the son of Richard Carpenter, the son of Richard Carpenter. He married Frances Monke on 2nd November 1667 in Lingfield, Surrey. John was buried on 22nd March 1674 in East Grinstead, Sussex and was shown as 'poor'.

Frances Monke was baptised on 1st January 1643 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was the daughter of John & Katherine Monke.

  1. Anne Carpenter was baptised on 18th October 1668 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She married Richard Grove on 28th March 1703 in East Grinstead, Sussex. Details of Richard Grove & Anne Carpenter are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  2. Frances Carpenter was baptised on 13th September 1670 in East Grinstead, Sussex. 
  3. Mary Carpenter was baptised on 25th March 1673 in East Grinstead, Sussex.

  1. The main groupings of Carpenter's for the period 1500-1700 occur in the parishes of Buxted, Chailey, Framfield, Frant, Uckfield & Tonbridge (Kent). There are also some in East Grinstead & Rotherfield. There are a few records of Carpenters in the parishes of Burstow, Limpsfield, Lingfield, Fletching, Hartfield & Cowden (Kent) and there are none in Ardingly, Horsted Keynes, Isfield, Little Horsted, Maresfield, Newick, West Hoathly & Worth.
  2. For the period 1613-1651 (Age 16 at marriage to age 60 at birth of youngest child) there were no John Carpenters born in East Grinstead. There was a John Carpenter born in the adjacent parish of Lingfield and five born in the surrounding parishes. As the marriage to Frances took place in Lingfield the John identifield is very likely to be correct.
